I'll blame women for this. You all can carry a mobile phone but not a knife or a pepper spray? At least 50% of the cases could be avoided if the rapist is scared of possible pepper spray use. I blame parents for this. Why do you trust people with your children. Do not trust anyone. Animals guard their younger ones all the time in the jungle. The situation is no different in India. I blame the public for this. Why do you have expectations from a police force whose only job is to serve the political class and loot public. You got to help yourself. Carry weapons and attack the criminals. Be ruthless and make it violent. Thr criminals should be scared, not you.

Its not the entire judicial system, or the lawyers that should be blamed. Three or four men in the Supreme Court are imposing their values on one hundred twenty crore citizens of India. If anything that needs to be done, it is to send a clear message to the Supreme Court that the people of India want the death penalty to remain, imposed and carried out. That no intervention by the Supreme Court is allowed once the case has been decided by them and the President has turned down a mercy petition. I think that the courts, instead of upholding the Constitution, are challenging it. They must be told that they have no power to do so. The only way such provisions of the constitution can be changed is by Parliament in ways clearly laid down by the Constitution. In January 2013 the parliament changed the law to impose the death penalty in cases of murder by rape or repeated offence of rape. But the Supreme Court, instead of striking down the law as unconstitutional, is simply challenging the application of the law. I suppose the court will only come to its senses when their wives are brutally raped in the streets of Delhi.

The number of incidents per day is population dependent and hence quite meaningless for making comparisons. The relevant figure is the number of cases per thousand population per annum. The US , UK and most EU countries have a higher incidence than India. The incidence per thousand population in India is one of the lowest in the world. These alarmist and misleading figures are routinely dished out by the press to create sensational and shocking headlines.

Don't believe these statistics, they do not tell the truth. The real truth is that 99% of these rape cases are false. Women lure men to have affairs with them, have consensual sex and when the affair breaks down women go and file rape case. Want proof? Most of these rape cases are file weeks, months even years adfter the so called sexual encounter. If a woman is really raped (against her will) she will go and lodge a complaint immediately say within 24 hours because that is the natural reaction. Everyone in India, Government, police, judiciary and society knows about this sordid situation yet they all are afraid of speaking the truth. Reality is these women are the real criminals while the men are innocent victims.

Very shocking to hear this. It is a very sad state that we as a country are being viewed in this angle as well. The legal system really needs to get strong else this would worsen. It is so scary when our women go out of the house and we keep calling them every 5 minutes to check if they are safe.
