India is better in the service sector, like IT, back office operations. Compared to , Indians are better educated (degree wise) and speak better English.

You are telling a world renowned economist and Finance guru who teaches at University of Chicago that he don't understand economics? What he said is absolutely correct. We should focus on creating an internal market, than trying to replicate manufacturing model. Even is trying to get out of their model, due the pollution and environmental issues it created. Manufacturing will go to places where the labor is cheap and abundant. It also needs systems in place and a disciplined workforce.
Economics is not a science - so economic theories are often morphed to serve political needs. The economic theories espoused in the US works for the US and are advantageous for the US. The same theories may not work for India. Rajan's coddling of banks (ATM fees, 1 week ago) is an example of an action that works in the US, but not in India. That was a bad move. This opinion is also bad. India needs to protect its manufacturing, not for export but to prevent being flooded with goods. Import substitution generally leads to lower quality, true - but the low-end goods from already has lower quality. The reason why textbook theories do not work here is because is a special case - they are an autocratic country with artifically low slave-level salaries for labour. They are hardly a fair competitor. We should protect against such competitors.
That would mean disbanding elections, for starters. is low cost just because people don't have a voice. You can see a few documentaries etc. of labour conditions - our poor live much much better.
