NEW DELHI: Marking a step towards women empowerment, Vankadarath Saritha on Friday joined as the first woman bus driver of the Delhi Transport Corporation. Introducing her, the Delhi transport and rural development minister Gopal Rai called it a new begng and said the department would appreciate if more women come forward to accept the challenge.

The 30-year-old driver, from Nalgonda in Telangana, has been posted at the Saroini Nagar depot and will start working officially from April 20. "After four weeks of training, I am really excited to start my work from Monday. Initially, I have been given day shift. It will be a challenge as the reputation of drivers isn't so good, but I would follow all the rules and especially keep women safety in mind," Saritha said.

Saritha, who comes from a financially weak background, said this government job means a lot to her and it would make it easier for her to support her family. "My father works as a farmer. We are five sisters and I am the youngest. All my elder sisters are married. One of my sisters is also a driver with Meru Cabs. I want to give a message to the women in our society that no job is meant only for men. Women can do anything if they value their potential," she said.
Saritha来自家境贫寒的家庭，她说，这份工作对她十分重要，能够让她更轻松地支持家庭。“我的父亲是农民。我们有5个姐妹，我最小。姐姐都已经结婚。其中一个姐姐也是出租车司机。我想向社会上的女性传达一个信息，即没有哪个工作是只有男人才能干的。女性能够做任何事情，如果重视她们的价值的话。”
Saritha started her career as an autorickshaw driver and has worked as a bus driver earlier in Hyderabad too. Before getting selected for the DTC, she was working as a tax driver in Delhi.

There are large number of ladies who are driving cars in Delhi. More ladies can come forward and learn driving Buses and become bus drivers. Ladise are driving cars and flying aeroplanes, why not drive buses?
