Four cops arrested for robbing driver on national highway at Palghar

MUMBAI: Four traffic constables allegedly chased a driver on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad national highway and forced him to withdraw cash using his ATM card on Saturday. The driver was threatened that he would be booked in a false case for carrying banned gutka.

Madan Varma (30) a resident of Silvassa was on his way to the Sahar airport in an Innova (DN 09 K 0195) to pick up his employer Pawankumar Chulet. When he reached Kasa on the highway in Palghar disrict, another Innova car (MH 04 EX 5453) intercepted him. The four occupants identified themselves as crime branch officials and insisted on examining his car. They said that they had a tip-off that Varma was carrying gutka and plastic bags from Silvassa.

When Varma said that he was not carrying any goods in his vehicle, the four men threatened to plant gutka in his car if he did not get into their car. Varma sat in their vehicle which was headed towards Vasai.

Varma in his complaint at the Kasa police station said that the men assaulted him with sticks and took away his wallet. On not finding much cash in his wallet, they took him to an ATM at Vasai and forced him to withdraw Rs 25,000. The men took away the cash and left Varma at Vasai.

Varma called Chulet who asked him to file a police complaint. Varma had noted down the registration number of the vehicle. Based on the vehicle registration number, the police identified the men as Raju Chavan, Raju Shaikh, Suresh Rathod, Jitendra Chougle, all constables with Vasai traffic.

The vehicle was traced to one Madhukar Jadhav, a resident of Bhiwandi. Jadhav told the police that the vehicle was being used by his son-in-law Chavan - a traffic constable. Chavan told the police that he along with Shaikh, Rathod and Chougle had indulged in a number of highway thefts.

These cops are wolves in sheep's clothing. Driven by greed,they had committed several robberies,it seems. They deserve severe and quick punishment under the laws.
