MEERUT: Asma, 28, did not have the slightest idea that her husband Umer Ali, had gambled her away for Rs 50,000 and that the three men waiting for her in Moradabad had actually "won" her. Luckily for her she found something amiss in the behaviour of the three men and quickly raised an alarm, eventually taking refuge in a police station nearby.
Asma was asked by her husband to accompany him from their house in Amroha to Pakbara, 10km from Moradabad. When they reached the place, the three men were already waiting. She found, to her shock and disbelief, that her husband had "lost" her in gambling and was about to hand her over to the men, who in turn were to take her to an unspecified destination.
"My husband had lost me in a gambling match. My worth was assessed at Rs 50,000," the traumatized woman later told TOI. Fortunately for her, when she raised the alarm, two passersby, men who happened to be from her parents' village, Bhojpur, recognized Asma and freed her from the clutches of the three men. They then took her to the office of the senior superintendent of police (SSP) from where she was referred to the women's police station.
"We have received the complaint from Asma, after which we got her medical examination done. Right now we are looking into the allegations made by her and investigations are going on about the exact circumstances behind it," said investigating officer Geeta Devi, talking to TOI.
Ali and Asma were married in 2012. But from the very first day, according to Asma, he had shown his "true colours". "On the very first day of marriage, I was beaten up and later I got to know that he had all the vices, including drinking and gambling. Over the years, he either sold or lost in gambling all the valuables of our household. On Monday , eventually he put me on stake as well. I did not come to know of it until the time I was handed over to those men at Pakbara," said Asma, narrating her ordeal.
