US ready to help India modernise its military: Top American commander

WASHINGTON: The US is ready to help India modernise its military and jointly they can improve India's military capabilities in "significant and meaningful" ways, a top American commander has said.
华盛顿：一名美国最高指挥官表示，美国准备帮助印度实现军事现代化，并以“重要且有意义”的方式与印度共同提高其军事能力。
Over the past decade, the defence trade between the US and India has touched nearly $15 billion and is expected to gallop in the next few years, as India is looking at the US for some of the latest military hardware including fighter jets, latest unmanned aerial vehicles and aircraft carriers.
过去的十年里，美印两国间的国防贸易交流近150亿美元，预计未来几年内会飞涨，印度希望从美国那里获得最新的军事装备，包括战斗机、最新无人机和航空母舰。
"I believe that the US is ready to help India modernise its military. India has been designated a major defence partner of the US. This is a strategic declaration that's unique to India and the US. It places India on the same level as many of our treaty allies," Commander of the US Pacific Command or PACOM Admiral Harry Harris told PTI.

"I think the trilateral relationship between India and Japan and the US, that relationship is very important," he said, while advocating that Australia too should join this group.

According to Harris, there is a lot that India and the US can do together.

"I'm pleased that India is a participant in Rim of the Pacific Exercise (RIMPAC), the Pacific exercise that's hosted every other year in Hawaii. I'm pleased in general with where the relationship is going, and I look forward to more as the years progress," he said.

No. We should develop our own technology. America is willing to sell to make money but we will be respected only if we manage to develop our own better and cheaper hardware and software. Learn from ISRO. Push DRDO, to develop better tanks (not import junk Russian tanks that fail) or MIGs that are flying coffins. Our political leadership should support DRDO and push it. This easy excuse of importing military hardware is corruption ridden. India spends huge sums and gets peanuts in return. Politicians like importing because they make money on bribes. That is what has happened all the time with Congress leaders getting richer and India suffering. This has to stop. We need to go for ISRO business model. Make military hardware and export to others. It was US who put sanctions on India for 3 decades because of which no country could export critical defense technology to India. Also, the educated elite leave our country and flock to western countries. So our best minds serve other countries. How then can we aspire to be a superpower? With the level of corruption in our country it's impossible to catch up with the bigger players. Japan was nuked. Yet they worked hard and developed into a First World country. South Korea worked hard after the Korean war and is a technological marvel, a developed country. Both these countries were helped by US. India needs US help in all areas.
