Let India grow at 8-10% for 10 years before chest thum: Raghuram Rajan

印度央行行长拉詹：在空头承诺前先让印度保持10年8~10%的速度增长

NEW DELHI: With India trailing on economic growth post demonetisation, former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan has said the government should not have done "chest-thum" on being the fastest-growing economy without achieving very strong GDP expansion for 10 years.

新德里：在废钞令之后，印度的经济增长速度落后于，前印度储备银行行长拉詹说，政府不该在没有获得10年强劲GDP增长的情况下，就“空头承诺”成为增长最快的经济体。

In an interview to PTI, he said India can lecture the world on things such as culture and history, but on growth, it should do that only after achieving 8-10 per cent rate for 10 years.

在PTI的一次采访中，他说，印度在如文化和历史方面可以对世界说道，但在增长方面，应只能在持续10年有8~10%增长率的前提下。

Rajan, the only central bank governor in two decades who did not get a second term, courted controversy when in April last year he had called rising India a one-eyed king in the land of blind. BJP Rajya Sabha member Subramanian Swamy had then called for his sacking, saying he was "mentally not fully Indian".

拉詹是20年来唯一一位没有连任的央行行长，去年四月，他称印度的崛起为盲人之地的独眼王。人民党成员Subramanian Swamy遂称他为“精神并非完整的印度人”。

Refusing to comment on Swamy's remarks, Rajan said his comment was taken out of context.
"Not that I was forecasting anything, I was merely saying we have to be a little cautious about being too bullish about ourselves. That remark was made in April 2016, every quarter since then, our growth has fallen. So, I would argue in hindsight, and I didn't have any reason to believe that would be the case, but caution was warranted," he maintained.

India's GDP growth slowed to 5.7 per cent in April-June this year, down from 6.1 per cent in preceding three months. clocked 6.5 per cent growth rate in both the quarters.

今年4~6月，印度国内生产总值(GDP)增长放缓至5.7%，低于前三个月的6.1%。在这两个季度都实现了6.5%的增长。

Rajan, who had predicted the 2008 global financial crisis, said Indian economy still is very small at USD 2.5 trillion, but "we feel we are a big country."

Stating that India and are not paired anymore, he said in order to be paired, has to slow down and India has to grow at a rapid pace for the next 10 years.

拉詹曾预测了2008年全球经济危机，他表示，印度经济规模依旧是很小的2.5万亿美元，但“我们觉得我们是一个大国。”

的规模是印度的五倍，说明印度和再不能匹配对比，他说，要匹配的话，必须慢下来，印度必须在未来10年快速增长。

Rajan is correct in suggesting not to compare with India. Size of economy is far greater than that of India. A consistent 8% growth for feww years is needed. The transformation started in the NDA''s first phase with concentration on infra structure and road. This followed by IT evolution helped the nation during the past decade. The current focus on transparency and industrial growth can facilitate that target. Yet, the corruption and damage caused through illegal and over exploitation of the system all these years need to be set right first.

Mr Rajan thanks for your invaluable advice. People like you should stay where you are. In difficult times you run away after taking education here and then give Godly advises. You didn't speak a word when UPA was looting the country and NPA of the banks were blowing past the rooftops. Now you seem to be concerned more???
