Stories From Gaogang...........Part 6
What is the best way to see China, when you are living in China? Just get in to any bus, drop two coins in the drop box which is installed on a pole at the front entrance. There is no conductor in the bus. The driver conducts the whole business very well. I have never seen a scratch, a dent, a broken side view mirrors or signs of any mishandling of the bus. I don’t know if the buses are fitted with speed governors or not but I have never seen the bus over-speeding, overtaking from wrong side, starting and stop suddenly, jum signals or doing any traffic violation or being driven irresponsibly.
Local Bus Interior in China- Notice the bucket for cleaning and the dustbin
The driver even waits for some passenger he may espy running for catching the bus, in the rear view mirror which he/she checks to ensure all passengers have disembarked and are safely away from the exting door which is in the middle of the bus. I think all bus drivers of Haryana Roadways should be sent for a crash course and they may be too happy to attend because besides getting a free trip to China, they may find emotional bond with the word “Crash” and might think that it may be a course in learning how to survive the ‘crash’.
Haryana Roadways Bus
He/She has all the controls on the dashboard and a video monitor in front of him where a continuous footage of various locations in the bus including the entry and ext points is displayed. The driver is solely responsible for the bus, even its upkeep.
At bus terminus he/she brooms it, empties the dustbin that is positioned near the ext in every bus. He/she even washes it. I have seen them doing it at the terminus and I am sure it is not out of love. The driver takes care of the bus like it be his personal vehicle. In China, employment for a job is holistic. I have seen in every shop, the sales women broom and mop too. It is unthinkable in India where everyone doesn't think beyond the scope of the job he/she is contracted for.
When I ask the Chinese I come across, whether men help the women in household chores, they say that they do, but personally I don’t believe it to be completely true, because my impression is that in the Chinese society the women still are seen as subordinate to men as in other Eastern societies and are treated less respectfully than the women in cultured section of Indian society are treated or the respect they command Haha.
However, sharing household chores by men with women in India is a different story. In most of the Indian homes (barring mine Hahaha) as far as I know, if the food gets spilled on the table, or there is a sticky patch on the floor, the husband yells and calls his wife to come and clean up and she in turn may scream at the maid or the servant or wait for her/him to do the job, if they employ them, but the husband will never get up and do the cleaning.
Well..I haven’t done it in my home and at times, Ok- every time :) but I feel that my willingness to share, my initiatives to do such small jobs myself sent wrong signals to my wife or maybe it’s my chauvinistic ego that tells me so, but well I think it is better than seeing the job left undone until the next morning. Although I consider my thinking orthodox, as even still after nearly forty years of marriage doing such things gnaws my pride, but while living here in China, we have no maid or servant to help and there is none to report to the whole neighbourhood of having seen me mop or cleaning and above all, I am the only one she has at her disposal Hahaha.
I do not say that the Chinese are more cleanliness conscious than us, but there is no indignity in doing any job in them. There leaders don’t pick up brooms, with a posse of sycophants joining in for the Photo Op to mark the starting of a drive to clean up the nation and to inspire the people to take some initiative in doing some cleaning. I doubt if any of those Babus and their bosses after the photo session, as much even wipe the dust off their tables.
This mentality has to change in us but will it? I doubt it ever will but there is a possibility that if all people start doing their bit of cleaning up, the people who traditionally do these jobs might sit in protest, citing the drive as anti-poor and a conspiracy of robbing them of their livelihood.
Bus Stop at Gaogang- Clean and well kept
Bus stops are steel structures, factory made in bulk, built up design, easy to install units. I like this concept of work. On a chosen stretch of the road on any day you can find the electrical poles, young trees, the bus stop units or anything that is to be installed, lined up at the locations where they are to be erected. The erecting gang then goes from one unit to another and by the evening (the Chinese mostly work for one shift, although it can stretch to more than twelve hours from dawn to dusk) you can find hundreds of units erected. The road give the look of having been there since years.
Bus Stop at night- Well lit displays
The bus stops on the road to Taizhou are made from two steel square sections shaped like huge ‘U’s placed upside down. The top is covered with thin metal/plastic sheet. The back of the unit has two electronic billboards which help the bus company or the administration earn revenues from the advertisements. The display is a scrolling type of unit which exhibits more multiple advertisements. Between the two screens an electronic display board is placed, which tells about, time, temperature, bus routes etc.
Electronic Display board at a Bus Stop in Gaogang
In Shanghai, the bus stops have display boards with route maps having bus stops marked by tiny bulbs which light up as the bus passes the corresponding stop, meaning thus that they are controlled by a monitoring system which is connected to GPS and keeps track of the bus movement. Two stainless steel benches are placed in front of the billboards which also serve as illuminated back walls of the unit. Simple ideas-intelligently used but for them to work, the whole mechanism in place should be working and most importantly, the power supply should be available to the unit at all times.
Two years ago, when I was in Chandigarh, the Administration had started replacing the old brick structure bus stops with the ones which were so similar in design to those described above that I have a feeling that they were imported from China, using a big chunk of the budget. Although manufacturing them doesn’t require high end technology but there are obvious advantages of trips to China and cuts and commissions which form a part of every deal government or private sector contracts in India, and the Chinese are too happy to please to further their business interests.
After placing the structure in place at least the masonary work has to be done locally and for months that I was there, it hadn’t been done, nor was any electric supply given to the billboards which were gathering dust. Besides having the problem of providing electricity to these units another big hurdle in Chandigarh is of using a certain place for displaying the advertisement. The administration is strictly against this and ever since Chandigarh has been granted a heritage city status by UN, the Administration is absolutely adamant in its resolve of maintaining its uncompromising stance of allowing any changes to the “Carbousierian” look of the city, not even as much of giving a coat of paint to the building facades sullied by moss and grass growing in the cracks.
Stripped off all advertisement boards- Public Toilet in Chandigarh
A few years ago, Chandigarh administration had come up with a bright idea of letting the walls of the public toilets be used for advertisement purposes and suddenly the city had walls of the public toilets displaying colourful advertisements and the good thing about them was that they were illuminated at night and so they added brightness to the whole aspect. It was too good to last and so, the routine process of setting up inquiries into allotment of contract started. The investigation found the company that was allotted the contract deficient in services. It was found to have been unduly favoured by the concerned officials with renewal of contracts at an escalated costs. The investigations are still underway as is generally the case in India.
I read that a further penalty of some 40 Crores has been slapped on the company but so far there is no news of any officials of the administration having been penalized for their connivance. It’s so common a scene in India. CBI is raiding some premises of previous Finance Minister and his son and some investigation regarding illegal deals amounting to hundreds of crores have been going on for years.
Last week there is a news of CBI raiding some places for shady land deals of Mr. Lallu Prasad Yadav who has been holding various high offices for almost three decades and has been linked to innumerable scams. He is said to have amassed properties worth thousands of Crores. Then someone posted on WhatsApp the picture of Lallu with his first three children aged between 1 and 3 with the whole family sitting in rather humble quarter of a peon of a veterinary college before he became the Chief Minister of Bihar in 1990. What is the purpose of doing all these raids and investigations? Ever since independence of India, how many ministers or their relative have been proved to be guilty of any crime and prosecuted? If the government is sincere in setting an example, it should ask all the politicians the source of their riches they acquired in such short spans of time.
I wrote in my Hindi poetry at one place:-
Jaanch aayog, aur shwet patra, to hain sab lippa-poti (white wash)
Is desh mein kabhi kisi, neta- abhineta ko saza nahin hoti.
All these Enquiries and White Papers are mere Eye wash
In this country, no leader or film actor ever gets prosecuted.
Jaanch aayog,aur shwet patra,hain sab lippa-poti(洗白)
Is desh mein kabhi kisi,neta-abhineta ko saza nahin hoti。

People like you write great informative article which serve as an eye opener. Our country need to make a lot of progress which only depend on the working mindset of people.I don't know how Chinese has been so well ingrained & trained themselves to work honestly & sincerely .We need to show such pictures to our rural & urban community , maybe Indian film made or based on this may awaken Indian conscious too.

Hello Divya,
For an instant I thought that my sister in law had made an account with Sulekha and commented on my blog :), but well it doesn't matter. Much appreciate your comment. Yes, there's a lot to learn from the Chinese. Making a film based on it is a great idea that hasn't yet crossed my mind but my blogs do enjoy quite some popularity with the Chinese.
你好Divya,

That is a good piece of information. I saw these chargeable buses a few days ago in Taizhou. Thanks for telling me. I will write about them in the following blogs.

Another gem from you Navneet
The less said about our uncultured ,uncouth ,corrupt politicians, the better !
How nice the bus stops and buses look! In Tamilnadu, the buses are much better compared with the North. In fact, in the small town of Kumbakonam, quite some institutions like Banks and Jewellery shops have built A/C bus shelters !! Looks so neat..Very soon some unscupulous ones may be found slee here, is another matter
By the way, I have been wanting to ask you for a long
Navneet

Thanks UshaJi- My internet connection is giving a problem and my job is kee me very busy, otherwise I have a lot many stories to tell. I saw some days ago in a whatsapp forward an Air Conditioned Bus Stop at Mumbai by Daiken and really felt a lot good. In China, I haven't seen any such initiatives by manufacturers or corporate houses. I hope this are maintained and well kept and as you said, kept free from encroachment. As regards, Paan eating or any other things like we glutton Indians like to :) the Chinese have meals at rigidly fixed times and mostly nothing in between. In the shop malls though you can see the trend catching with children having ice-cream or a candy but that's about all. Even in Food Courts ( except for Mac'Donald or KFC- Americans have spoiled their habits too:)) you can't get meal after 1:30/ 2 O'clock in the afternoon and 8 O'clock at night because Chinese lunch time is 1130 and dinner time is 5:30. No eating after that. Chinese don't eat Paans or chew Paan Masala but smoking is a very serious problem in China, but they don't take smoking or any sort of breaks during the job. For them eight or twelve hours whatever the job demands- full time on the job. They carry their glass bottles with green tea leaves to which they add hot water wherever available and work with cigarettes dangling from the mouth if the job environment allows that.

Dear Navneeth,
Honestly, started loving China through your blogs. Without an axe to grind this the truth, real and uncontaminated.
