If our flaming space station is about to hit YOUR country on Easter Sunday we'll let you know 'promptly', says China as it admits it STILL can't predict where it will land

Sure, it just would send millions of particles of debris into space each of which could destroy any spacecraft that hit it

Blowing up an 8.5 ton space ship just gives you 8.5 tons of debris. More space junk orbiting our planet is not a good thing. Some will still impact the earth of course.

My homeowners insurance doesn¿t cover space debris. So are insurance companies going to add this to everyone¿s policy so they can charge us more. If a chunk hits my house who do I sue.

China needs to leave space exploration to the Americans and concentrate on getting safer building construction down in their country. This is beyond them. Safer buildings that aren't hurting their citizens should be a priority.

It would be more than ironic if it landed on a Chinese restaurant.
PaleMoon, New York, United States, 15 hours ago
China hasn't admitted that they can't control the descent, so we don't know for sure. Being hit by debris is only part of the problem. With the chemicals onboard, or biological experiments, it is a big WMD. Is that how they intend to use it, or is it just accidental- we don't know for sure.

If it lands here there will be an import tax and the post office will charge an £8 handling charge.

Thay are not sure exactly where and when it will hit, but strongly advise people not to use the bus stop on the corner of Church road in Newport, South Wales Between 14:45 and 15:30 on Sunday.....................

This sums up China in a nut shell . They even make inferior quality space stations .

Can we please try to blow this up while it¿s in orbit? No sense taking the chance it lands in a big city, right?
Erika, Houston, United States, 1 hour ago
You are missing the point. It still has to come down, regardless. You want to send up some missile to blow it up which would also have to come down thereby creating more debris? NO.
Player123, New York, United States, 30 minutes ago
Actually if they blow it up there is a much higher likelihood that the surviving pieces get burned up completely as they re-enter the Earths atmosphere. Much better than risking some of the poisonous gas hitting a major city and killing scores of people. I just think that we may not have the technology to hit something going 18,000mph.

China is the poster child for irresponsible governments -- they have destroyed their environment and now they are junking up space too. Still no significant Chinese brands outside of China, with the possible exceptions of YUM brands and InBev. Want to be a global power China? Then act like it -- and dont let your space junk fall out of the sky and when it does, figure out where it will land.

Maybe there should be an international transportation board that sets safety requirements for space vehicles like a self destruct button?
Alex, St Petersburg Russia, 12 hours ago
They can't blow it up, fragments can be dangerous for other satellites. Self-destruct means controlled fall. It requires rather complex manipulations with engines to correctly orient and slow down the station. If China could do it, it would mean that they didn't lost control.

An average if 200-400 pieces of space junk (mostly not Chinese) re-enters and burns up in our atmosphere every few days. Rarely ever does anyone see it or hear about it. China is trying to take an extraordinary amount of open and honest responsibility here and should be commended. This is the kind of engagement the world wants and needs from China.

And also I meant to say 200-400 pieces every year, not every few days. Screwed up the editing once I looked up the real statistics. Sorry bout that error.
