英媒: 中国首个40吨物流无人重卡启动测试

A 40-tonne driverless truck has been successfully tested in Shanghai, marking a major milestone in China's automation push.

Armed with high-tech cameras and sensors, the unmanned lorry can travel up to 80 kph (49.7 mph) safely while transporting cargo, according to its maker.

Named 'Strolling Dragon', the model is claimed to be the first self-driving truck developed by a Chinese e-commerce company to pass logistics campus tests and highway-scenario road tests in China.

The truck is jointly developed by Suning Logistics, a subsidiary of Chinese commercial giant Suning Holdings Group and PlusAI, a US-based provider for autonomous driving technology and transportation solutions.

In what could be the future of logistics, the truck is able to operate without human input within pre-programmed parameters.

Video of the tests carried out on Thursday shows the truck being able to autonomously steer and follow driving routes, avoid obstacles, and accurately park for loading and unloading while transporting cargo.

Once the starting point and destination are set in the system, the driverless truck can automatically plan its route from point A to B.

With a loading capacity of 40 tonnes, the truck can travel up to 80kph (49.7 mph) safely, according Suning Holdings Group in a statement.

The truck is also fitted with cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) and deep-learning technologies as well as high-tech gadgets such as laser radar and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors.

As a result, the Strolling Dragon is equipped with superhuman vision that can recognise obstacles and pedestrians at a distance of more than 300 metres (984 feet).

The company also said the operation is held to a higher safety standard as the truck is designed to run a pre-exsting 'warehouse-to-warehouse' course, enabling it to foresee highway conditions and select the best route.

Once the trucks satisfy basic requirements such as electric steering and automatic transmission technology, they can be converted into self-driving vehicles at a relatively low cost, according to Suning Logistics Research Institute deputy director Luan Xuefeng.

'The cost of a complete conversion won't exceed US$10,000 (£7,543),' he said.

At the same time, these autonomous trucks could potentially lower the accident risks related to long-distance driving and create a more comfortable and safer working environment for the team of 100,000 drivers at the company, Mr Luan added.

A regular long-range delivery would normally require three to four drivers in rotation per journey. Now, only one driver is needed per delivery.

The driver is still required to ride in the lorry to monitor the robot chauffeur as well as to full up the gas tank, pay highway tolls and tend to any technical malfunction that might appear during the journey.

Uber, Daimler, Tesla and several other global automobile manufacturers are develo their own self-driving trucks.

Mr Luan said that current regulations in China prohibit autonomous vehicles from driving on public roads, with safety being the biggest concern.

'Unfortunately, most of the exsting policies and road rules are not compatible with the development of autonomous vehicles,' he said.

All very nice. However, what does it do when it runs into a pothole splashing dirty water onto them sensors? Stop right there where it is - blocking that lane - until a human driver arrives?
