Abhinav Bindra: The man who changed Indian Olympic history
August 11 2008, , - Flashback - 25-year-old Indian shooter Abhinav Bindra shoots a near perfect 10.8 in his final shot in the Men's 10m Air Rifle event. Almost immediately he knows he has won an Olympic medal. But he's not sure where exactly on the podium he will be standing. The fans inside the Olympic shooting range in and those watching on television though know instantly, thanks to the scores displayed on monitors and TV screens - Bindra has won the gold medal. He has re-written India's Olympic history by becoming the country's first individual Olympic gold medallist.
Fast forward 10 years and he is still the only individual Olympic gold medallist from India. Abhinav, recalling the moment he won the gold told TimesofIndia.com "I realised I had won the gold when I went to my coach and asked her. I obviously knew I had done enough to win a medal but I wasn't sure if it was the gold medal. And when I went and hugged my coach Gabby, that is when I realised that I had won a gold medal."
It's not surprising perhaps that Abhinav didn't know he had won the gold immediately. After all his single minded focus on the process itself is now the stuff of legend. Somehow through his career he managed to detach himself from the desired end result and stay focused on the job at hand. It's something that he talks about in his autobiography and will no doubt feature prominently in the Abhinav Bindra biopic that is in the works. Even after a medal was won, it was the process that gave him more satisfaction than the medal itself. It might not be the mantra that works for every athlete, after all, the incentive of a medal is a huge motivation, but it worked for Abhinav.
When asked what he thinks of the Olympic medal he won in 2008, Bindra told TimesofIndia.com, "(If it was up to me) I would put the medal in a kitchen cabinet or something like that. I am not particularly sentimental or emotional about the actual piece of metal. What I really am emotional and close to is the whole journey of 22 years, striving to win a gold medal. Looking back it's not that piece of metal which is gratifying to me or which gives me a sense of pride, but my journey which gives me a sense of pride."
Perhaps it was this ability of his to stay focused on the process that gave him the confidence to shoot the way he did in the finals in . He finished fourth in qualifying in the 10m Air Rifle event and then upped the ante in the finals. His final shot was a near perfect 10.8 and it helped him beat defending champion Zhu Qinan of as an Indian finished on top of the Olympic podium in an individual sport for the very first time.
Remembering that historic final fondly, Abhinav said, "The final of the Olympic Games in 2008 were the 10 best shots of my life. When I went into the Olympics in 2008, I was not very outcome driven. I was so immersed in the process of competing. I was so immersed in the process of executing my skill to the best of my ability that all I cared for was to do my best on every single shot. And I was able to achieve that in those ten shots under the greatest amount of pressure that I felt and encountered ever in my life and that itself was the greatest victory for me".
After the initial euphoria settled down some people pointed out that the fact that Abhinav's parents built an indoor personal shooting range for him was a big help. A luxury that most other shooters can't afford. Talking to TimesofIndia.com, Abhinav's father Apjit Bindra said, "I would say that (for) a person at his level, a personal shooting range is not a luxury but a requirement. He has to train at odd hours. And that keeps him totally focused on the sport and we were very happy that we provided him this facility so that he is only a few yards away from his home and could shoot without being disturbed and without having to go out and travel to shooting ranges".
But Abhinav's story is so much more than just the privileges he enjoys. If all it took to become a world class athlete was affluence, world sports would have overall been very different.
In 1998 Abhinav became the youngest participant at the Commonwealth Games at the age of 15. But from the very begng he had to overcome obstacles. He had -2 power in both eyes when he took up shooting and it later went up to -4 and he had to have corrective surgery. In 2006 he was hit by a career-threatening spinal injury. He was forced to pull out of the Doha Asian Games. But he persevered. Talking to TimesofIndia.com, his personal physiotherapist Digpal Singh Ranawat said, "Abhinav is a person who remained completely honest, committed and dedicated to his goals, so, whenever he faced any form of injuries or health challenges he faced them head on through world class rehabilitation and continuous bio-mechanical corrections throughout his career."
The gold medal in was the biggest highlight of Abhinav's career. But the top prize also brought with it a crisis. At the age of 25 he had to ponder if his best phase was already behind him. Abhinav explained that further, saying, "Victory also comes with a certain crisis and that was the crisis that I had. For 15 years I had woken up every single day with a goal in mind and that was to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games. And one fine day in 2008, in August I had this gold medal in my pocket and I didn't know what to do after that. The gold medal created a huge void in my life."
10 years down the line Abhinav's achievement still remains a rare feat and India's gold finger continues to remain the straight-shooter he always was. He has retired from professional shooting and the 2008 gold remains his only Olympic medal. But that shiny piece of metal did more than just propel him to super stardom, it taught him something very valuable. Talking about that, the 35 year old said, "With every experience in life comes a learning. And my learning is to try and make the best of life and to try and be the best that you can be every single day. Perhaps nothing in my life can match the great thrill that I had after wng the gold medal at the Olympic Games. I don't even want to compare other life experiences with that."

Why are we making mockery of ourselves by celebrating the wng of a gold medal 10 years ago.
Please stop it. Don''t stoop so low. Have some pride. Someone else has actually given the right comment which I don''t want to repeat.

135 crores and 1 gold in 10 years. When a country gets looted by their own politicians for 70 years then this is what we achieve. Enjoy what you deserve and do vote for BAR DANCER. We love foreign rule and italian rule.

We Indians get little success but we blow the trumpet like anything. While kudos to Abhinav, it is also a gross reminder of poor state of sports in the country. Things are improving under Modi but still a long way to you. This news is a total waste of time.

In countries like and u.''s., a gold medalist is just another player.

He is a legend. Not only shooters but entire Indian Olympic sports person inspired by his achievement. I was a cricket fan, of course not any more. India can bag many many medal If we can ban this money making bating enterianment (like movie) sport in India. Ban Cricket to achieve International sporting honour for Nation.

2008 is a long way back and have been archived in the History of Indian Olympics and now people look forward to freshers who win medals. It would be good if Abhinav trains others for the shooting and takes credit on a different base reather than recalling the days of 2008.

It is high time that the tally increases beyond that solitary Gold and yes, India has talented athletes now who can achieve it in the next Olympic. Amen!
