The Indian economy is showing signs of a growth turnaround. India continues to lead the pack for Asia in salary increases.

The minimum wage currently varies from Rs.4,500 to Rs.9,500 a month for unskilled workers in various states. The national minimum wage will be fixed for unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled employees. India’s labour market has more than 470 million workers and around 12 million are entering the labour force every year.

“National labour unions have been demanding a national minimum wage of Rs.15,000 per month for the past three to four years. And now the Seventh Pay Commission has suggested Rs.18,000 per month minimum wage for government employees.

But as per government calculations:

As per Dec 16, 2013 yearly income earned by an individual in India is the lowest when compared with people living in the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, , South Africa) nations, a Gallup survey showed on Monday. The annual median per capita income in India stood at $616, the 99th position among 131 countries.

This is difficult to answer because the salary varies widely based on the type of occupation.

A relatively simplistic approach would be to use the per capita income and adjust it for people who are unlikely to be employed - people under the age of 20 and above the age of 60.

Per capita income of India is slated to be INR 100,000 for 2016 - 2017. [1]

Number of people below the age of 20 in India - 490 million (2011 census) [2]

Number of people above the age of 60 in India - 110 million (2011 census) [2]

Total population of India - 1.2 billion (2011 census) [2]

USD to INR exchange rate = INR 66 to the dollar. [3]

So, average income can be calculated as (INR 100,000 * (1.2 billion/(1.2 billion - (490 million + 110 million)))) which is roughly INR 200,000.

In dollar terms, 200,000/66 = $3,030 (approx).

However, the problem with this number is that it does not reveal the huge variance in salaries of people engaged in different activities.

Salary - means desk jobs which are as low as 3–4K INR in private sectors and 18K+ INR in Govt. sectors. These people may be partically educated but their degrees don’t really matter. Based on skill, expertise and experience, the salaries in private sector rise rapidly to within reach of global averages. An average unskilled manual labourer earns Rs.400–600 a day but there is a huge scarcity in this sector as no body wants to do such a job. USD=68INR and hardly 1% of the population pays taxes.
