An Indian woman has been brutally raped by two men who dragged her out of the holy River Ganges and took turns in sexually assaulting her.

The rapists filmed their assault of the 45-year-old woman in Patna, Bihar, in northeast India, and later posted the shocking video on social media.

The disturbing footage sees the woman pleading with her attackers to consider the 'sanctity' of the river. In Hinduism, the River Ganges is the Goddess Ganga descended to earth, and the sacred river is often referred to as 'Mother'.

The unnamed victim had been bathing in the Ganges, a religious Hindu cleansing ritual, when she was attacked.

The video shows one of the men dragging her from the water before ra her on the riverbank.

The woman was eventually released by her attackers and able to get to a police station, NDTV reports.

Several local news outlets have claimed that when the woman first reported the rape to police, officers refused to take action. However, once the video went viral on social media, police tracked down both culprits.

Both men have been arrested by local police and remain in custody pending the investigation.
