China mass produces its 'most powerful drone bomber': Footage shows latest test flight of CH-5 which can carry 16 missiles and fly 60 hours without refuelling

China has completed the first test flight for the mass-produced model of drone bomber CH-5, according to state media.

据官媒报道，已完成量产无人机轰炸机彩虹-5的首次试飞。

The CH-5 unmanned aerial vehicle, also known as Rainbow-5, was unveiled last year and was said to be China's largest and most powerful drone bomber.

彩虹-5无人机于去年亮相，据说是最大型和最强大的无人轰炸机。

The aircraft can carry 16 missiles and fly up to 60 hours without refuelling, reaching a maxmum range of 10,000 kilometres (6,213 miles).

The test flight took place on July 14 at an airport in northern China's Hubei Province, according to inhua News Agency.

China Central Television Station reported that the success of the trial fight meant CH-5 had entered into its mass production stage.

The mass-produced model has a wingspan of 21 meters (69 feet) and a maxmum external load of 1,000 kilograms (2,204 pounds), said the report.

'Because of its external load, its reconnaissance and attacking capabilities has made a qualitative leap compared to the previous models,' Ou Zhongming, the General Director of the Rainbow Drone Project, told China Central Television Station.

The plane's maxmum take-off load is 3,300 kilograms (7,275 pounds).

A redundancy system has been fitted into its flight control, which would enable the drone to carry on with its task even if one component breaks down, Mr Ou added.

The CH-5 is also capable of carrying high-definition radar systems which would allow the aircraft to conduct surveys at different altitudes.

CH-5 is developed and manufactured by the China Academy of Aerospace Aerodynamics. It's the latest member of the country's Rainbow Drone Project.

When the CH-5 debuted last autumn at the China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition, Chinese media said it was the country's equivalent to the American military drone, General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper.

Global Times, a Chinese state-owned newspaper, claimed that CH-5 'is much more advanced' than MQ-9 Reaper.

CH-5 is said to be twice as big as China's last drone CH-4 and can carry 2.5 times more external load than CH-4.

The head engineer, Shi Wen, said in a previous interview with Global Times that the flight time of CH-5 would be expanded up to 120 hours in the future.
