The 1959 Antartic treaty, signed by 48 countries prohibit countries from exploiting its land. Anyway, kommies are a universal disaster.

I've got a doormat that was made in Hong Kong, does China want to make a claim on that as well ? Today Antarctica, tomorrow Bognor Regis ?

Politics aside, building in that type of environment must be an incredible feat of engineering like the research station built on hydraulic stilts that adjusts for ground shift. It amazes me some of the things humanity can build.

Their engineers are trained here displacing our own students bc they pay more for tuition

Antarctica, and the Arctic for that matter, should be declared nature reserves by the UN, with no commercial activities or claims of ownership being allowed to be exercised there by any nation.

The UN can't declare anything, the entire thing relies on consensus and voluntary compliance. There are numerous treaties which the USA and Russia choose to ignore so why should China be an exception?

They are abysmal stewards of the environment in their own country. Now they get to ruin the Antarctic? This is bad news.
