A 'monstrous' experiment or a huge leap for science? Experts condemn 'irresponsible' Chinese scientists who claim to have edited the DNA of twins to give them immunity to HIV
Experts have slammed a team of scientists in China who claim to have altered the DNA of twins to grant them immunity to HIV, the AIDS virus.
Researchers from across the world have labelled the experiment 'irresponsible', with many calling into question the perverse moral and ethical implications.
One British scientist, who described the experiment as 'monstrous', said the researchers involved were playing 'genetic Russian Roulette' with healthy babies.
Gene editing is banned in Britain, the US many other parts of the world, largely because its long-term effects on mental and physical health are poorly understood.
The technique carries the risk that altered DNA will warp other genes - potentially dangerous mutations that may then be passed down to future generations.

You should never edit DNA. It will lead to the creation of a half man, half beast (Devil, Minotaur) which is mentioned in the bible The Beast out of the earth.

The only way to prove that the genetic alteration has given immunity against HIV is to deliberately subject them to the infection. THAT must surely be not only unethical but illegal?

Part of the population is naturally immune to HIV. Because of this, they really aren't doing anything different than all of the other medical miracles of reproducing nature.

Totally different. Heart transplants only affected one individual. This has the possibility of affecting many more.

Look, we are appalled to hear scientists use animals to experiment on. Let alone babies! How many experiments do you think they have to do, and on whom, before this reported "success"?

There are multiple reasons why the promise doesn't outweigh the risk because we really don't understand what the consequences will be i the short of long run....I can understand using these technologies on patients that are terminally ill but not on embryos or diseases that have other less risky medical controls..

RoseKennedy, Everywhere;..."It never never never ends well. Dolly the sheep died within 6 months."... I read a long story about "Dolly". The number I seem to recall was that Dolly was the 130th attempt or something in that range. All the attempts before her were either still birth or born with debilitating genetic problems that resulted in death soon after birth. That's why such things are banned in humans. Can you imagine if these twins were the result of 100's of previous attempts? I work in biological science. It is simply impossible to imagine that they were successful on their first attempt. That simply never happens. They clearly have no controls over there.

Wealthy people will jump on board with this. 100 years from now the genetically modified children will have trees sprouting from their hair follicles, and bears growing from their nail-beds. A brave new world.

China in its ongoing quest to create superhumans. The problem will be getting the immune system to recognize the code without attacking it. Surely they knew this before subjecting these poor babies to this. And how will they test it? Probably by exposing these children to the virus and disease. Utterly unethical. I'm willing to bet the parents were also poor and uneducated but the government offered them something.

It is not palatable to persuade a desperate couple who can¿t conceive naturally to allow untested medical research to experiment on their future unborn children in exchange for free infertility treatment. Who also knows what the consequences will be on the future wellbeing of those edited children? Lots of ethical questions need answers here
