Here is some example:
3 idiots
Me:
It was a movie I thoroughly enjoyed. I wanted to be entertained, I wanted to see something Indian and it was perfect! An emotional storm with the fairy tale ending.
My friends:
I played this movie to my friends, who have no relation to Indian culture, twice;
The first try, a girl and a boy were soon tired from its length and from many seemingly illogical moments. By the time of delivering of a baby scene, they were "out of the game", this absolutely crossed their level of what is believable in movies. They described it as nonsense, naive, silly story, however they liked it somehow.
The second try, two girls, fell asleep within twenty minutes.
我把这部电影给我的朋友们看了两次,他们一点都不了解印度文化;

My wife and I go to film festivals so have seen a number of films from Bollywood. Over all it is a bit difficult because the production and acting many times are what we would call high school or even middle school level dialogs and attitudes towards romance or relationships. The social stories just don't seem to have depth in general. Adults don't like hanging with kids too long because the dialogue is just so juvenile.
That said, I've seen a number that were touching and felt real. They were not Americanized, which I wouldn't expect, but had the kind of human dynamic we all would either like to be in or hate to be in. They developed a story which pulled you in and allowed you to experience being in that predicament. I got teary, angry, laughed, and longed for what was going on. The production, acting, sound, and script went well.
I don't remember the names off hand of the particular ones but will look some up and post them here as I find them.

Indian cinema is in a dire need of movies with mature and sensible content. I'm surprised at how people are buying this junk with the name tag of "Bollywood." When I see an Indian movie, I am forced to think of two things. Are the people really that ludicrous and gullible laugh/clap/acknowledge those dialogues and scenes? If the people are fine, then what's wrong with the filmmakers? Why do they fail to realize their social responsibilities? One or two years ago when I would actually go though they ordeal of watching those 3 hour long movies, I'd notice some blatantly recurring themes - songs with one lady dancing and lots of men dancing with her; slapstick humor more suited for kids than adults; Chuck Norris action scenes in a day and age when even Hollywood doesn't make this kind of nonsense.

I am an American, non-Indian and me and my family love Bollywood and other Hindi movies.
They offer much more emotion, fun, and education of issues than anything coming out of Hollywood does so we prefer them to Hollywood. We rarely watch Hollywood anymore and have been Bollywood fans for nearly 20 years.
Not only are your movies cleaner and less trashed with foul language and sex, they are also more entertaining. After tasting the spice of Hindi films, it is very hard to go back to the bland fare being offered by Hollywood.
Our favorite actor is the amazingly talented and diverse Shah Rukh Khan but we love many other actors as well.

I think Bollywood movies can be fun and entertaining because of the sometimes exaggerated acting and colourful and skilful dancing. The fact that I understand nothing of the dialogue isn't important. Sometimes there are subtitles, but these too can be amusing because they are in such bad English. They are an art form in their own right and shouldn't be dismissed. Movies are supposed to be entertainment, some people seem to demand too much.

The traits which defines the Bollywood movies of the late 80's and early 90's will be peripatetic songs, mannered pensiveness, saccharine romance, belligerent actors and embellished actresses. Incidental to the trends are perfunctory music, insipid stories and redundant star cast.
But this trends had begun to change by the late 90's with technology driven market and sensible audience. People had started getting exposure to more of television and couldn't be deceived with vapid stories and unappetizing acting. With the influx of more production house, neophytes who aspire for a successful career and actors who have set themselves for distinguished space the overall situation in the Bollywood has changed. Even though Hollywood, which is still the global paragon, Bollywood still lacks the approach to find a path. This primarily is because it's the audience driven industry and the viewers are still ain't perceptive enough to appreciate movies with spellbound scripts, cherubic background scores and songless movies. Only what is personable to the audience is what is created.
It's still a long way for the Indian audience and so also for Bollywood.

Looks like the right movies don’t reach the western audience, usually star movies are not the ones you should watch as they are made for fans more often than not, also ya there so many nonsensical movies made..for what ever reason and the good ones just get lost in them. dozen movies per year from india should be very high quality out of a 1000 i guess….. so be extremely selective and i am sure it will make a impact on you!

I would agree with shuchita's statement. Just like any other cinema, bollywood too has its own highs and lows with some ridiculous stuff but also some extraordinary art. The movies mentioned above are fantastic and several others beat Hollywood productions despite the miniscule funding and cgi stuff utilised.

I am saying my personal experience..Foreigner loves to watch romance movies not the action ones...Bollywood makes more money now a days in foreign ..Almost half of there movies profit they earn from outside of india..I have a freind who is from afganistan. He almost watch every bollywood moviea eventhough more than me....lolzz....So foreigner loves towatch bollywood movie
Yes No
It's like watching any other movie.
I really enjoy some bollywood films, others not so much. I watch them with english subtitles. Feels the same as any other movie to be honest, hope that answers your question.

Then I would say that you haven't watched good movies...
There are many movies like 3 Idiots, Chak de India, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Peepli Live, Pakeezah, Dil chahta hai which are actually worth watching and would define Bollywood to you.
