However, one has to understand that since we have just one category to fight for, from among 100's of films, it is healthy to send a Drama film instead of a historic action film, since highly acclaimed films like the 300 haven't won an Oscar in the past.
Baahubali is indeed a great film coming out of India, despite it's blemishes the film had done justice for the one of it's kind attempt. For those who think that the Visual effects were the only thing to watch out for, please do hear the response the film has garnered at France and Korean film festivals.

The Oscars or more correctly, the Academy awards is an annual 'American' awards show.
The people who decide whom the nominees for each category of an Academy Award shall be or who shall win a particular award are all members of one committee. This committee is called the AMPAS or the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This committee is estimated to have about 5500 to 6000 members.
The people who are part of this committee are largely actors and people who have won an academy award in their earlier lives. 94% of these members are Caucasian and 54% are above the age of 60 years.
So you can probably see why it's very difficult for an Indian film, no matter how good it might be, to make it to the Oscars. We have almost no representation in the people who decide the fate of the Oscars.
Apart from that, the Academy Awards focus on films from the English-speaking world. In India, most films are not entirely in English. This makes it very difficult for any Indian movie to be chosen for the major categories of awards such as, 'Best Picture', 'Best Direction', 'Best Actor in a Leading Role', 'Best Screenplay'.
Indians or Indian films at the Oscars have been nominated for categories such as 'Best Foreign Language Film', 'Best Original Score', 'Best Original Song', 'Best Documentary on a Short Subject'. America, England and France usually rule the Oscars.
The most interesting thing about Bahubali or rather the cause of all the hype behind the film, is the cost of production. Bahubali costed around 250 crores. This is a hefty sum for a Bollywood/Tollywood movie but not for an average Hollywood epic.
Bahubali production cost : 2,500,000,000 INR
Pirates of the carribean (on stranger tides) : 24,012,210,325 INR
Apart from this, in case India does plan to induct Bahubali into the Oscars, it may be entered into the categories, 'Best Visual Effects' and 'Best Foreign Language Film'.
As far a visual effects go, Bahubali is certainly the best in VFX that an Indian film has seen, but it cannot yet be compared to films such as Avatar or even 300. (Which this film borrowed heavily form). In case there isn't any competition at all, then Bahubali may stand a chance.
As far as the category of 'Best Foreign Language Film' is concerned, Bahubali is not a good candidate and if introduced from India, it shall not be able to stand against the rivals.
Bahubali is simply a grand film. In my opinion, it probably will not bring an Oscar to India.
