An average baby starts to learn to talk at around one year old, but this newborn boy in China seems to be way ahead of his peers.

The child shocked his mother and nurses after apparently enunciating the word 'mama' at just 23 days old.

这个孩子出生23天就说出了“妈妈”这个词，这让他的妈妈和护士们感到震惊。

The boy's mother said though her son was likely to have made the sound unintentionally, she and her family were still amazed by what they had heard.

孩子的母亲表示，虽然这可能是孩子无意中喊出了这个词，但她和她的家人仍然感到惊讶。

The baby 'talked' for the first time as he was receiving a back rub at a postnatal care centre in Changchun, northern China's Jilin Province, on January 20.

The unusual scene was captured in a video shot by the boy's mother before being shared online.

In the 10-second clip, the boy is seen being placed on his stomach on a table as a nurse massaged his back gently. All of sudden, the newborn is heard saying 'aiya', and his excited mother gushed: 'This child is so funny.'

But seconds later, the boy suddenly called out 'mama', leaving his mother and medical staff completely stunned.

The boy's mother, who remains unidentified, told Jilin TV Station that her son had finished a swimming lesson that day.

She said she had only fed him a little milk before the swimming class to prevent him from throwing up, and hunger could have been the reason for him to make unusual sound.

孩子的母亲告诉吉林电视台，当天宝宝要去游泳，怕游泳时吐奶只喂了半饱，宝宝可能是因为饿了才发出不寻常的声音。

The new parent told reporters: 'He had been crying before and during the massage.

'Maybe he was angry (that I didn't give him enough milk), and later suddenly made the sound (of "mama").

'Although it was not intentional, my husband's family were very happy.'

孩子母亲告诉记者:“宝宝在按摩前和按摩过程中一直在哭。因为我没喂饱，也许他有点生气了，突然喊出了“妈妈”。虽然这不是有意识的，但我丈夫的家人非常高兴。”

Staff at the postnatal centre said compared to the other babies, the boy's was able to make particularly tonal sound.

An average baby says his or her first word at around 12 months old and by 18 months old, a vocabulary of 10 to 20 words can be built.

Commenting on the video clip, a doctor from Changchun Children's Hospital agreed that the boy was making sound unintentionally.

Dr. Zhang iaoming, the director of Department of Child Psychology at the hospital, told reporters: 'Babies between one and two months old practise making sound with their vocal organs, such as their throat and lips.

'Although this baby said "mama" very clearly, it was still an unconscious sound.'

It doesn't make sense to say when a baby says mama at 12 months they're talking, but if they say it in their first month it's just "a sound".
