17 killed as massive fire breaks out at hotel in Delhi's Karol Bagh

NEW DELHI: At least 17 people were killed in a massive fire which broke out at a hotel in central Delhi's Karol Bagh on Tuesday morning.

The fire service and police officials pulled out around 50 people from the hotel in a four-hour long rescue operation. Many people were severely injured and have been admitted for treatment. Around 35 people were rescued safely.

Most hotels (including star hotels), business establishments, high rise apts/hospitals..... do not have proper/working fire fighting equipment. Wherever they are installed initially, are never maintained/tested.

As a society we fail with compliance of safety standards. Law enforcement is a farse. Corruption and lack of fear of punishment coupled with the greed for money..... turn us into irresponsible anti social creatures. We dont deserve to ve called humans.

No matter how important the Hotel may be, whether it is 5 star or another luxurious hotels but fire fighting arrangements are never up to the mark. Even if there is lay out for fire fighting, it is never tested and fire fighting drill is never carried out. The Hotel authorities are all responsible for the fire. Not only in hotels, the multi storied apartments , too never test whether the fire fighting pump is in order or not.

Hotels in Karol Bagh are piled up like matchboxes in narrow streets. There are no safety measures and emergency evacuation in case of fire or any climatic hazard. Tough, there might be regular checks by inspection teams but their mouth is gagged with pink notes, thus they turn eyes blind. It will never stop in India, government is not corrupt but people are. Sadden due to loss of lives, their families will be going through despair.
