An eight-year-old Minnesota boy has become an internet sensation in China after pictures of his funny facial expressions were shared more than a billion times.

Gavin Thomas - known as 'fake smile boy' across the Pacific - is the go-to meme for Chinese millennials who use his face to convey how they're feeling when they're too polite to say it.

The schoolboy, from Minneapolis, first made a name for himself in the US in 2013, when his uncle started posting videos of the pair playing together on the video platform Vine.

Gavin amassed thousands of followers on his social media accounts - but it wasn't until last August when he created an account on Weibo, China's answer to Twitter, that he became a star.

The boy gained one million followers within 24 hours of making the profile. Today, Gavin has more than 2m followers on Weibo, 1.5m on Facebook and 450,000 on Twitter.

Last November he was given red carpet treatment while attending the official premiere of the hit animation movie Wreck-It Ralph Breaks The Internet.

Zhaoyin Feng, for the BBC's Chinese Service, said Chinese people relate with Gavin's facial expressions because they 'tend to be less direct and want to save face.'

She added: 'A lot of them [Chinese people] find themselves in uncomfortable situations where they have to smile to be polite.

'That's why a lot of them, especially millennials now use Gavin's memes to mock themselves and ease awkward conversations.'
