Naval officer dies in fire onboard INS Vikramaditya

NEW DELHI: A young naval officer was killed in a fire that erupted in the engine room of the country's solitary aircraft carrier, INS Vikramaditya, while it was entering the harbour of the strategic Karwar base in coastal Karnataka after a deployment in the Arabian Sea on Friday morning.

The officer, Lt Commander DS Chauhan, "bravely led the firefighting efforts" that brought the blaze in the engine room under control swiftly to "prevent any serious damage" to the combat capabilities of the 44,500 tonne carrier, which carries MiG-29K fighters and helicopters, said the Navy.

"Lt Commander Chauhan, who hailed from Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh, fell unconscious due to inhalation of smoke and fumes. He was immediately evacuated to the naval hospital INHS Patanjali at Karwar, but could not be revived," said an officer.

"The 30-year-old officer, who had done a specialised NBCDC (nuclear, biological, chemical damage control) course, had got married just about a month ago. He is survived by his wife and mother. The Navy has ordered a board of inquiry into the incident," he added.

The mishap on board INS Vikramaditya comes shortly before it was slated to participate in the largest-ever "Varuna" naval exercise between India and France off Goa and Karwar from May 1 onwards. With both countries planning to deploy aircraft carriers, destroyers, submarines, fighters and other aircraft for the exercise, the French nuclear-powered carrier FNS Charles de Gaulle will have a full complement of Rafale-M fighters, E2C Hawkeye early-warning aircraft, AS-365 Dauphin and other helicopters, as was first reported by TOI.

INS Vikramaditya, or the refurbished Admiral Gorshkov inducted in November 2013 under a $2.33 billion deal with Russia, is India's largest and most powerful warship. With the 45 MiG-29Ks ordered for another $2 billion to operate from its deck, the carrier is also the costliest single weapon platform India has ever bought.

The carrier, which is 20-storey tall with 22 decks, has a crew of 110 officers and 1,500 sailors. With a maxmum range of 7,000 nautical miles at an economical 18 knots speed, the mammoth warship can carry 24 MiG-29Ks and 10 choppers like Kamov-31, Kamov-28, Chetak and Dhruv advanced light helicopters.

Engine Room fire does happen due various reasons. They can be controlled by courageous fire fighting team otherwise leads to massive damages and disastrous consequences..
