NEW DELHI: The government is set to introduce changes in the Motor Vehicle Act to introduce stiffer penalties - including fine and jail-for traffic violators. The bill, likely to be introduced in Parliament in the next few days, proposes Rs 10,000 fine for drink driving and blocking way of emergency vehicles, including ambulance, fire brigade and PCRs among other things.

Driving requires civic sense and discipline . Unfortunately both are lacking in India. Corruption is another reason I bet no body will pay 10,000 when you can settle at much lower cost ( donot mind CCTV CAMERAS )

DUI in US: you get arrested. You go to jail. Then you have to pay for bail abd then see a judge. Your driving license is suspended for one year. If you drive, you get more jail time abd the crime is upgraded to a felony.

If you have kids in car or cause an accident: it’s an immediate felony and you are behind bars.

Your picture and charges becomes public record and shows up in background check and google searches.

Rs 10000 fine is a joke.

Talking over phone while driving, driving with high beam on in city, throwing trash/paan or gutka/cig butts from the car and wrong parking are also serious menace. These should attract higher fines.
