‘Uri’ big winner with 4 National Awards, ‘Badhaai Ho’ bags 2

NEW DELHI: Mainstream Hindi cinema bagged the lion's share of the 66th National Film Awards 2018 that were announced on Friday, with ‘Badhaai Ho’ -- produced by Times Group's Junglee Pictures -- getting two, ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike’ four, and ‘Andhadun’ and the controversial ‘Padmaavat’ three awards each in various categories.

The best feature film was bagged by Gujarati film ‘Hellaro’, a film on women empowerment in a patriarchal society.

古吉拉特邦电影《Hellaro》获得最佳剧情片奖，这是一部关于男权社会中女性赋权的电影。

‘Chalo Jeete Hain’, a short film inspired by events from the childhood days of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, won the National Award for best non-feature film on family values. AS Kanal, chairman of the non-feature films jury, said the film was judged on the basis of its content and the jury was not aware that the film was inspired by the PM’s childhood.

‘Badhaai Ho’ won the award for best popular film providing wholesome entertainment. Actor Surekha Sikri also won the award for best supporting actor (female) for her role in the 2018 blockbuster film.

The josh was high for the biggest winner of the day, ‘Uri’, which won awards for best direction, best audiography, and best music direction. The film’s lead actor, Vicky Kaushal, also shared the best actor award with ‘Andhadhun’ actor Ayushmann Khurrana.

This year, a total of 419 entries were received for the National Awards, of which 84 were considered by the 11-member Central Panel.

Sources told TOI the jury was initially divided on 'Uri' being considered for the awards since the film had been released in January 2019, while the National Awards are being conferred on films made in 2018. There were nine votes against it, and only one in favour, but the opinion was turned around after an impassioned argument in favour of the film. The fact that the censor certification was awarded to the film on December 31, 2018 helped it to just make the cut. For good measure, debutant filmmaker Aditya Dhar also won the best director award.
