A British explorer has become the first man to trek the staggering 4,000 mile length of the Yangtze River in China by foot.

Ash Dykes, 28, from Old Colwyn, north Wales, finished the gruelling year-long expedition on Monday after battling blizzards, -20C temperatures and altitudes of 17,060ft (5,100m).

The explorer, who was chased by packs of wolves, bears and wild dogs, crossed the finish line just outside Shanghai with millions watching him on social media.

Mr Dykes said: 'It's an unreal feeling to cross the finish line. It took two years to plan and one year to execute, so it'll take a while to sink in. But it's such a special moment - history is created.'

Before embarking on the challenging journey, Mr Dykes trained for two years from his parents home in Old Colwyn, where he mapped out the treacherous route and taught himself Mandarin.

However just a few weeks into the the adventurer's journey he found himself facing grave danger when he was followed for two days by a pack of wolves who had only 24 hours earlier killed a woman.

He said: Right before we set off down a valley and over the mountains along the Yangtze there were locals who told us that only the day before, there was a lady right where we were heading, who was killed by a pack of wolves.

'The problem was we didn't know what they said until seven months later, our film footage was translated-so we cracked on regardless.

'For the next two days, we heard a pack of wolves (maybe four or five) and they were following us over the mountains.'

Later on in the journey he met up with other walkers who accompanied him on his expedition.

Mr Dykes added: 'This has been more than a personal achievement; it is unlocking human potential and showcasing that, in a world where every corner of the planet is occupied by people, there are still things that haven't been done.

'It has also been far from just a challenging journey, as it's been a cultural one too.'

Mr Dykes has become a household name on Chinese social media and his face is plastered across billboards around the country.

The explorer also launched his very own clothing line with the outdoor clothing brand Kailas before going to star in a GQ photoshoot for Adidas with the renowned Chinese martial arts instructor Jacky Heung.

He said: 'The good news is that I've seen a huge increase in knowledge and understanding within the communities, towns and cities along the way.

'People are aware of the damage being caused to their water sources and are now actively changing their ways for the better - it's inspiring to see.'

Commercial sponsors including sunglasses and camera manufacturers contributed towards the cost of the trip.

The first RECORDED person to do it. Probably thousands of people have done the journey before him.

Some people will do anything to avoid working. Btw, when is he holding his next 'exhibition'?

What is your problem? Why not? It's an incredible achievement! How about congratulations young man, well done? He's achieved more than most of us would, had an incredible adventure, seen parts of the world none of us would, and now has an amazing story to tell his future kids / grandkids. That's why!!
