China announces it will complete its £7billion global satellite navigation system Beidou - which rivals US-made GPS - next year

China has officially announced that it will finish building its own global satellite navigation system next year, having started about two decades ago.

The £7billion ($9billion) project, called Beidou, has been designed to rival and eventually replace the US-developed Global Positioning System (GPS) in the country.

It's part of Beiing's move to lessen its dependence on American technologies.

The news was announced on Sunday by the Chinese delegation at a summit of The International Committee on Global Navigation Satellite Systems, which was held in Bangalore in India, China Satellite Navigation Office said in an online statement.

Beiing has so far launched 55 satellites into space to build the costly system, which consists of three sub-systems, namely Beidou-1, Beidou-2 and Beidou-3.

In comparison, the GPS system has 24 satellites orbiting Earth.

So in addition to the original American GPS we now have GLONASS (Russian ), Galileo (European) and Beidou (Chinese) all doing the same thing? I can see why each wants its own system which is for predominantly military reasons but imagine how much good could have been done in the world with the billions spent duplicating systems? I suppose it happens in many areas and I am just being too simplistic?

China, like Europe and India, wish to reduce their dependence on US or Russian launched low orbit space technology. Troubling is China and Elon Musk satellites in massive quantities, could result in catastrophic collisions, producing debris that would wipe out all exsting GPS and satellite communications. Paper map, compass and landline telephone users, will be fine.

So will Galileo - be completed next year that is. How can a paper from a EU member about gps forget to mention the EUs own gps system - Galileo? even after a US senator suggested it be shot down? It's more accurate than the US gps system and has 30 satelites. And is in service. Your phone might support it. But if Beidou is better and we're allowed to use it then by all means lets do that.

At a flick of a switch the gps coordinates can be changed on every gps device. With a Chinese system they can hit with pin point accuracy.

That's the point of having your own, the US can turn off GPS for everybody but if they did that China would still be able to rely on Beidou and by 2023 the EU will be able to rely on Galileo. Supposedly after Brext we'll be building our own but we just have to figure out a way to print free money and send things into space first.
