AURANGABAD:A 17-year-old Dalit boy was beheaded and his parents attacked with sharp weapons on Saturday, allegedly by the father and uncle of a woman who had eloped with the boy’s older brother, at Lakh-Khandala village in Vaijapur tehsil of Aurangabad.

The brutal murder evoked strong condemnation from Dalit activists and state home minister Anil Deshmukh on Tuesday tweeted that the Aurangabad rural police would complete the probe into the murder and file a chargesheet within 30 days.

The police arrested Devidas Devkar and his brother Rohidas for the murder of the boy, Bhimraj Gaikwad, and the attack on his parents Balasaheb and Alka. Bhimraj’s elder brother and Devkar’s 20-yearold daughter had allegedly eloped on March 12.

The Devkar brothers were produced in court on Monday and remanded in police custody for four days. They have been booked on charges of murder and under sections of the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

Police said that after the couple had eloped, the woman’s brother threatened the Gaikwad family with dire consequences.

The Gaikwads lodged a complaint with sub-divisional police officer Gopal Ranjankar the next day, following which instructions were given to the Vaijapur police station to look into the matter.

The Gaikwads have alleged that the police, instead of taking preventive action, merely recorded a a missing complaint about their son and ignored the alleged threats they had received from the girl’s family.

The case is presently being investigated by superintendent of police Mokshada Patil.
