23 migrants killed, 20 injured after trucks collide in UP's Auraiya; PM Modi condoles death

KANPUR: At least 23 migrant labourers were killed and 20 others injured when a truck carrying them collided with a DCM in Auraiya. Most of the migrants were coming from Rajasthan and were natives of Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. Of the 20 injured, 15 of them were being shifted to PGI at Saifai in Etawah as their condition was described as critical.

Reports said the incident took place near Mihauli village under Kotwali police circle around 3.30am. Auraiya district magistrate Abhishek Singh said investigations were under way to establish the cause of the mishap. He said the priority was to provide best possible medical help to the injured.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death of migrant workers and said the government is carrying out relief work in full swing.

Taking a serious note of the incident, chief minister Yogi Adityanath has directed senior officials to visit the site and ensure proper medical help to the injured. “Chief Minister has also directed that all the injured be provided medical care immediately and the commissioner and IG Kanpur to visit the site and immediately file a report on the cause of the accident,” said UP Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Awanish Awasthi.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav slammed the ruling BJP for turning a blind eye to the problems faced by migrants. Describing the incident as 'heart wrenching', the former UP CM said the government must now start focussing on the woes of the migrants.

Recently at least 15 migrant workers were killed in three separate incidents in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. The Uttar Pradesh government had on Friday announced that district authorities must ensure that migrant workers do not walk or cycle home and all such persons must be provide transport.
