Delightful blog, Navneet !! Got to know about Chinese culture and traditions. The whole city is decked up like a bride...very beautifully photographs!

Hi,
Extensive blog and very good pictures. Loved each one of them.
Ad those showrooms...amazing :-))
If only India gets cleane,r I would not ask for anything else :((
navneetkumarbakshi
Yes Indeed if India becomes cleaner..but how will we achieve that? They love their country. They will leave you speechless. See for yourself when you go there this summer.

Navneetji,
Thanks for a literally illuminating and aducative article on the Chinese New year, celebrations, religion and superstitions. Many superstitions are akin to those in India. Photographs bring to light the zest for life that Chinese have. --Shiv--
navneetkumarbakshi
Thanks Panchali- We have a lot of similarities with their culture and traditions. I put these things here for highlighting that. The blog was becoming too big so I couldn't talk much about those.

Loved reading this. But at present I don't feel friendly with chinese becuaeof the rukus they are creating in Himachal Pradesh.Adding to this,e very chinese year is the year of some wild/ domestic animal. I saw the profile of dragon so may be this is dragon year.
navneetkumarbakshi
Well scribble- Let's not talk of border politics because we ( at least I) don't know why and how the dispute has started. I have personally found them very warm and simple people. Politicians every where are shrewd. Yes this year is the year of Dragon.

Hi Navneethg
I think China could be the most superstitious country in the world as I understand from the plethora of customs and rituals they follow. So the co unist must have borrowed that red color from Chinese custom too. Very fascinating blog indeed. I learned a lot. But I expected some photos of lantern festivals (in fact i had researched on this topic for a quiz) but didn't find it here

Thanks Navneet :-)) for this Chinese New Year Extravaganza.. and all the finer details too.

Thanks for the elaborate writing on Chinese new year! Enjoyed the pictures
I didnt know the end of Chinese new year is the Lantern Festval, in Singapore, the Mid-Autumn (Oct-Nov) Festival is called the Lantern festival.. I love the chinese mooncake.. just that it is most often too rich that one can just eat one to keep oneself hunger free rest of the day (those are the days when i feel bad that my eating thresholds have gone down.. ) I amount of snacks that you get for Chinese new year is just amazing.. in fcat we have artisans coming from China for Calligraphy work, or doing the face-changing dance and other puppet show dance.. They come in during the months before chinse new year and leave home with a wealth of money!
navneetkumarbakshi
Thanks Divya,
Mid-Autumn festival is called Autumn Festival or Moon festival and they make moon cakes on that day. They are very rich and there is a very definite and complicated procedure for making them. You have to develop a taste for them. Maybe the ones you tried you liked but a few that I have tried, I didn't like the taste. yes they have many costume dances like our Bharat Natyam and other traditional forms of dances and there puppet shows too are very good. In fact anything that they do, they put in their heart and soul in that.

I can claim to know Chinese tradition and life style now after reading so much from your blogs Navneet :)
They simply are enthusiastic, happy people who value family as much as we Indians value our families.
Thanks for this vivid blog of wonderful information and pics!
navneetkumarbakshi
That's very true of them Promilla. It's only one month since I came back and I am begng to miss China. I got notes from some Chinese people who log on Sulekha. they have translated some of my blogs and posted on a Chinese site :)

Lucky you!!:)
navneetkumarbakshi
No still can't but nest time when I go ( if I go) I will make an effort to learn :)

Even though onslaught of co sm tried to kill beliefs and religion in China during Mao's regime and two generations have grown without any knowledge of religion (so they say) but the present day government tries to distance itself from Mao's beliefs on religion and customs because thousands of years of traditions can't be wiped off by enacting some laws.
Lantern festival is on the last day of fifteen days long Chinese New Year. In the pictures that I have posted, all the lanterns hung in the shops are for sale and are lit on the day of the festival. All the tableaux are wired and have lamps inside the figures and objects, to be lit on the day of the festival. On the day of the festival the Chinese release hot air balloons which are transparent and as they take to air the burning mass lights up the whole thing looks like a Kandil ( Akash Deep) and the sky is filled up with hundreds of those flying about. Besides that as such on every day they burst crackers and there is spectacular display of fireworks everywhere around.
City Lover
Navneet Saab,
Wow! Was like witnessing another new year celebration.
Another striking similarity is the "Laisee" - this is practised in Kerala as Vishu kaineettam. Elders give money to kids and youngsters on this Malayalam New year. I find many things common between Chinese and Indian festivals.
navneetkumarbakshi
Yes CL Sir, I too have noticed that we have very similar traditions.

Wow you lit up sulekha with your blog on the Chinese new year. Thanks for all the intricate details – made very informative and interesting reading. Yes to the Chinese, the new year holds great importance. Nice to have got all the details of traditions and customs followed by them. Lovely photographs Navneet, and what camera do you use. The illuminations and the night shots were superb
navneetkumarbakshi
Thanks Vijay- Chinese give great importance to every thing they do. I use a very ordinary camera Samsung Digital PL-20 5X 14.2 mega pixles

Lovely picture post. Chinese really enjoy celebrating new year. Streets are clean & neat. I really like to see China. I am glad you live in a beautiful country; enjoy your work and stay.
navneetkumarbakshi
Thanks Suresh Ji- It indeed is a beautiful place. They are very industrious and focused people. There is a lot that one can learn from them.

OMG
How did you load so many pictures? To me it was a big headache.
lovely pics and prose to go with it. Actually all Asians are traditional people and our festivals coincide with seasons. Informative. In another few you years you would become half Chinese. Ha ha.
navneetkumarbakshi
Hello Madhavi..It was like Make hay while the sun shines. Sulekha was in a mood to accept the pictures and I kept on posting those.

Dear Mr. Bakshi
As always a very comprehensive, with some wonderful pictures, article. It appears China has a very neat and clean environment, as one can see from the pictures you have posted. There is lot of tradition in Chinese lifestyle. We too have tradtions but gradually tradtion has been diluted by mass commercialisation and laxty.Next week there would be a Holi festival, which would have less colour but more noise, brawls and hungama.
MALAVIKA
Very informative and beautiful pictures! I wish I could visit the place during its festivities!
navneetkumarbakshi
Thanks Malavika- I have lots of pictures of China..I am just too lazy.

Hello Super India..I have seen more than half of the world and believe me except for Japan, there is no match to China..no country of Europe and certainly not the so called great USA. True, I haven't seen many parts of China and there are many poor provinces but those are in every country. China being a develo country like India is a lie that Indians are being made to believe. India is no match to China. My impressions are from what I have seen. Let's see if I get a chance to see more of it, I will write.
