An excellent article as always. A land of fish and rice (鱼米之乡 in Chinese) generally means the Yangtze Plain (the plain along the midstream and downstream Yangtze). Wuhu is a land of fish and rice. So are other places in this region. In an agricultural society, a place with affluence of fish and rice is definitely a rich place.

If I am not wrong the major industrial development too started along this river initially. The river which would often spell disaster because of floods has been tamed and is the major source of water transport and that's why the industry is flourishing along its shores. Happy New Year

Thanks Vijay,
I get lots of inputs from plenty of Chinese who read my blogs. They have great aesthetic sense. When I was there, the way the way the gardens and the lawns were laid, their art and calligraphy, the building architecture spoke of it.

Though due to rapid industrialization there have been violations of norms and we hear about air and water pollution but they are addressing these issues too. Let's hope that if and when Modi becomes the PM, he will bring in the change. We have the potential, the resources but we need a strong government at the centre.
