Mr. Gao from Wuhu wrote to me quite some time ago. I wasn’t able to devote time to write a blog about his place. Like most of the Chinese who communicate with me, he too has as a handicap of not knowing English. Still all of them overcome this formidable handicap and write to me in the effortfully made sentences about the places they come from.
The love for their country shows in their disjointed sentences converted to English by online translator. Every one of them apologises for his poor English and expresses a desire of having a cordial relationship with India.
I have no right to call a lack of ability to communicate in English a handicap but as an Indian, I can’t help seeing it as one.
Their neighbours, the Japanese and the Koreans are doing without English too and there are many countries in the world who too care two hoots for English. China has shown to the world that the lack of its knowledge of English cannot stop it from excelling as a nation, but there seems to be the inferiority complex in the minds of the Chinese on account of this, I don’t know why.
Unlike Indians they weren’t ever ruled by the British who were stunned by the riches of India when they landed on her shores in sixteenth century. There is one e-mail of “Lord Macaulay’s first impressions of India in circulation since years. He came to this land which was called "The golden sparrow" because of her immense wealth and riches. He, by his own admission, was confounded, wonder struck and left speechless by the prosperity of the nation. He spoke these words in the British Parliament in 1835 or there about.
Lord Macaulay said the following about India in 1835 in British Parliament.
"I have traveled across the length and breadth of India and I have not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief. Such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such calibre, that I do not think we would ever conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage, and, therefore, I propose that we replace her old and ancient education system, her culture, for if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater than their own, they will lose their self-esteem, their native self-culture and they will become what we want them, a truly dominated nation."
He was very right. For another a hundred and twelve years they kept on doing that. Today an Indian, who can speak English considers himself more qualified than the one who can’t and it’s not only that he thinks so, even the one who can’t speak English considers him to be mentally superior than himself because the whole society, even the government thinks so, prefers the one who knows English over the one who doesn’t.
Our prime minister, at least the one in office, can’t dare to speak in Hindi at an International gathering but the Chinese will insist on speaking in Chinese, even if he could speak English as fluently or haltingly :-) as his Indian counterpart does. We infact are still under a foreign rule or ruler, may I say :-)), some can see, some can't and most of us are oblivious to it.
Macaulay came to India nearly two hundred years after his countrymen started plundering her, but they were far down the list of depredators who came to this land in search of riches.
In 2011 when the vaults of a temple were opened to take an account of wealth burried there, the stcok taking was stopped after a few days on court order. And this is the case of the riches of a temple little known before the find.
"Reclining Vishnu" one of many "Murtis or Pratima". Made of solid gold....Priceless for antique value..estimated value 100,000000/- dollars
$22 billion in gold, diamonds, jewels found in Indian temple's secret vaults
As it appeared in the News :-
Gold coins, diamonds, and other precious stones discovered in the vaults of a Hindu temple in southern India are worth an estimated $22 billion. Debate is brewing about what to be done with the riches.
And this is the case of one temple, unheard of before it made the headlines. In India there must be hundreds of such unheard of treasures if not thousands.
Singing the Glory of God...The Glorious Golden temple- All the glitter that you see is of sheet of real gold covering the temple.
The Indian campaign of Alexander began in 326 BC. Muslim rule started in some parts of north India in the 13th century when the Delhi Sultanate was established in 1206 CE.
Richness of Art
This country might have been looted of her material wealth but cannot be looted of her culture, of her spritual wealth, of understanding by her many citizens as to what is the Real Wealth.
She was looted by the Afghans and Turks too and before the British, came the Dutch and the French too. Although the British left the ruling of the nation to us but they left us so wrteched that we don't even think our ability to make decisions worthy. In the recently declassified document making headlines, it's been disclosed that the then PM Indira Gandhi consulted Margaret Thatcher over Miliary operation code named " Operation Blue Star" for flushing out the terrorists inside the holy shrine "The Golden Temple."
