NEW DELHI: India added a record 14,000-plus new Covid-19 cases on Thursday, with big surges in the pandemic in Delhi, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, among other states. Maharashtra and Delhi recorded their biggest single-day jump in cases, with the former reporting 3,752 fresh infections while the national capital recorded 2,877 cases.

The surge came on a day when the number of people who have recovered from the disease crossed the significant milestone of 2 lakh.

With 14,052 cases on Thursday, India’s Covid-19 caseload stood at over 3.81 lakh, with active cases rising to more than 1.64 lakh, as per data from state governments. The previous record for the highest number of new cases was set just a day earlier, when 13,219 cases were reported. Thursday also saw the Covid-19 death toll rise by 343 to 12,602.

Maharashtra added 3752 new Covid-19 cases in a day, the highest so far, pushing its total case tally to 1,20,504 cases. It also added 100 fatalities to its cumulative death toll, taking the total deaths due to Covid-19 to 5,751, inching close to the 6,000-mark.

Tamil Nadu reported 2,141 cases, including 1,373 in Chennai, taking the total to 52,334. Forty-nine deaths were officially recorded, the highest so far, pushing the toll to 625.
