Coronavirus: India tops 12 lakh Covid cases in August, highest in world

NEW DELHI: India has recorded more than 12 lakh fresh Covid-19 cases in August, higher than in any previous month and the highest count by any country during this month. The milestone came on a day when the country reported more than 69,000 fresh infections, the second highest single-day tally so far, and 986 deaths.

India's count of Covid-19 cases in August (till 20th) stood at 1207539 as per data collated from state governments. The tally for the whole of July was 1109444 India's count of cases in August continues to the world's highest, with the US in second place (9,94,863 cases till August 19) and Brazil third (7,94,115), according to worldometers.info.

On Thursday, 69,317 fresh cases were detected in the country, taking the total caseload to over 29 lakh.

This was the second highest jump in infections in a day, after Wednesday tally of 70,101. The day's death toll from the virus was 986.

The highest count of cases was again reported from Maharashtra, which logged its highest single-day spike in infections with as many as 14,492 recorded on the day. This was the first time that daily cases had crossed 14,000 in the state.

Besides Maharashtra, eight other states reported their highest single-day count of cases - Bengal (3,197), Punjab (1,741), Gujarat(1,175), Madhya Pradesh (1,142), Chhattisgarh (1,016 since Wednesday night, 916 on Thursday), Haryana (996), Puducherry (554) and Meghalaya (126).
