BHOPAL: Amid nationwide outrage over the Hathras horror, a gangraped Dalit woman in MP’s Narsinghpur killed herself on Friday because police allegedly refused to register an FIR for four days, drove her away every time she went to file a complaint, and even threw her husband in lockup.

The woman’s husband has alleged on video that he was forced to pay the cops Rs 50,000 to be freed. “My wife hanged herself because police didn’t take her complaint. ‘What case,’ they asked, and drove us away,” he says in the video.

It went viral on Friday evening, triggering a furore. Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan ordered the arrest of the officer in charge of the local police outpost, ASI Mishrilal Kodoke, and an FIR against him, for refusing to file her complaint. Narsinghpur SP Ajay Singh confirmed the arrest late Friday night and said the complaint that cops took money would be part of the investigation.

Additional SP Rajesh Tiwari and subdivisional police officer Gadarwara Sitaram were removed from duty on the CM’s orders and the ASP asked for an explanation. “I will not tolerate crime against sisters and mothers. Those who commit such crimes will not be spared,” CM Chouhan said.

An FIR was registered against five persons — three for the gangrape and two, including a woman, for abetment to suicide — on the basis of allegations levelled by the kin,” the SP said. IG-Jabalpur Range B S Chauhan said two rape accused — Arvind Chowdhary and Anil Rai — have been arrested and police are looking for the third. One of the two accused of abetment, Motilal Chowdhary, is in custody too.

The woman, a 35-year-old, lived in a village about 70km from Narsinghpur town. According to the complaint filed by her husband, she was gangraped when she had gone to gather fodder for her cattle on September 28. She told her family and they immediately went to the local police outpost under Chichli police station but their complaint was not registered. She was found hanging in her house on Friday morning.

Her family said she was driven to despair as police refused to file her complaint and instead threw her kin in lockup. “After the matter came to light, the police outpost in-charge was suspended and booked under Section 166A (non-recording of statement).
