US election 2020: Puja performed in Kamala Harris’s ancestral village in TN; villagers given her favourite food as annadhanam

TIRUVARUR: Residents of Tamil Nadu’s Thulasendrapuram, -- the ancestral village of Democratic Party vice-presidential candidate Kamala Harris -- performed a special puja at the Sri Dharma Sastha temple in the village for her grand victory in the US election, being held on Tuesday.

泰米尔纳德邦Thulasendrapuram村是民*党副总统候选人卡玛拉•哈里斯祖籍所在村子。当地居民在该村的Sri Dharma Sastha寺为哈里斯举行了一场特殊的礼拜仪式，祈祷她在本周二开始的美国大选中大获全胜。

After the puja, the organisers of the event arranged an annadhanam (offering of food) on the temple premises. Around 200 people participated. Expressing hope that Kamala Harris would definitely win the election, J Sudakaran, who is one of the organisers of the event and also the president of Green City Rotary in Mannargudi, said they had prepared and served sambar idli, which is the favourite food of Kamala Harris.

"Around 200 residents of Painganadu and Thulasendrapuram in Tiruvarur district performed the special puja for Kamala Harris’s victory. We hope that she will become the vice-president of the country and will make our country, particularly the residents of Thulasendrapuram, proud", Sudakaran added.

Villagers expressed their wish that Kamala Harris would visit the village after her victory in in the election.

"Our villagers are very eager to meet her in person. So, we appeal to her to visit the village once she becomes the vice – president," he said.

Kamala Harris is the first Indian-origin vice-presidential candidate in the US. Thulasendrapuram is the native village of Kamala's grandfather and former Indian diplomat PV Gopalan.

The villagers installed flux banners in Thulasendrapuram after she had been announced as the vice-presidential candidate of the Democratic Party a few months ago.
