Husband in UAE prison for blasphemy, Ujjain woman pleads to PM Narendra Modi for help

BHOPAL: A 31-year-old woman from Ujjain has approached Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah seeking urgent help for her husband, a mechanical engineer, who has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment and nearly Rs 1 crore in fine by a UAE court for alleged blasphemy.

Ankita Pandey’s husband, 33-year-old Akhilesh, was jailed in February this year. She says he fell victim to a conspiracy hatched by a group of people, including two Indians, a Pakistani and a Sudanese national.

Exhausted mentally and financially after running from pillar to post, carrying along their two-year-old daughter, to free her husband, Ankita returned to her parental home in Nagda last month to continue her fight from here. She is trying to communicate with the Indian consulate and UAE president Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, ho to file a mercy petition ahead of UAE's 49th National Day on December 2.

Pandey, a native of Gorakhpur (UP), was working with Union Cement Factory in Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) city, as head of its safety section. Ankita shifted to UAE in 2013. On September 16, 2019, a Sudanese in his team filed a complaint against Pandey, accusing him of hurting religious sentiments. An employee from Pakistan and two from India became witnesses in the case. UAE’S criminal investigation department probed the complaint. Pandey was arrested and sent to Abu Dhabi's Al-Sadr prison on October 9, 2019. During trial, he denied the charges, but to no avail.

“We are in tears. I am sure he is innocent and has been implicated by his colleagues. The only thing I want from our PMO is to make an intervention and get him deported from UAE,” said Ankita.

“We are trying our best that Akhilesh gets pardoned on this UAE National Day. I am really worried for his future as well as my daughter and their child. UAE Law is equal to one and all. It is the same for the expatriates and its Citizens. There are chances for an appeal to higher courts and everyone is treated with respect by the police and law. This case might have been a serious case of blasphemy with proper documentation.
