AMBALA/ROHTAK/HYDERABAD: Haryana home and health minister Anil Vij on Saturday tested positive for Covid-19, just a fortnight after he volunteered for and was administered a trial dose of Bharat Biotech’s indigenously developed Covaxn.

I have been tested corona positive. I am admitted to Civil Hospital Ambala Cantt. All those who have come in close contact to me are advised to get themselves tested for corona, Haryana home and health minister Anil Vij tweeted. On Friday night, he had complained of body pain and fever. A Covid-19 test was conducted on Saturday morning with a rapid antigen testing kit and the result was positive. “After that, we collected his RT-PCR samples and he tested positive again,” Ambala chief medical officer (CMO) Dr Kuldeep Singh said.

维吉在推特上说：“我的新冠病毒检测结果呈阳性，目前我已在Civil Hospital Ambala Cantt医院接受治疗，所有与我有过密切接触的人都将接受新冠病毒检测。”

Bharat Biotech clarified that the vaccine had been designed to be efficacious only after participants in trials received two doses 28 days apart. Without referring to Vij, the company issued a statement mentioning that “vaccine efficacy will be determined only after 14 days of receiving the second dose”.

Covaxn, developed by Bharat Biotech along with the ICMR, is currently undergoing efficacy studies involving 26,000 volunteers at 25 sites across the country. Doctors at PGIMS Rohtak said Vij testing positive wouldn’t impact the ongoing Phase III trials. The minister was the first volunteer.
