India, UK talk free trade ahead of Boris Johnson's visit

NEW DELHI: Trade and investment with UK pushing India for a free trade agreement - along with Indo-Pacific, defence and security and cooperation for early recovery from Covid-19 - dominated the agenda for the meeting Tuesday between visiting UK secretary of state for foreign affairs Dominic Raab and his counterpart S Jaishankar.

Raab, only the second foreign minister to visit India since the onset of the pandemic after his US counterpart Mike Pompeo, also confirmed in a joint press conference UK PM Boris Johnson's participation as chief guest in the Republic Day celebrations next month. While he described India's invite as a great honour, Jaishankar said the development symbolised a new era in India-UK ties. UK also invited Modi to join the UK-hosted G7 summit next year.

Both countries agreed on a 10-year, 360 degree roadmap for upgrading India-UK partnership to the next level with Raab listing enhanced trade partnership next year and a future free trade agreement as the top priority.

"I think that could unlock huge opportunities for British and Indian businesses, lowering barriers in areas like food and drink, healthcare and life sciences, IT, data, chemicals and financial services. I think there are some exciting possibilities ahead," said Raab. UK has been keen to strengthen trade ties with India to offset the damage from its ext from the EU.

When asked how serious India was about the free trade agreement with UK, given that it had walked out of RCEP comprising Asia-Pacific countries, Jaishankar said there was serious intent to take trade relations with UK forward. He added that this was like comparing apples with oranges as there was no question of India carrying over its experiences and decisions with RCEP to the negotiations with the UK.
