HYDERABAD: With the container ship ‘Ever Given’ that had blocked the Suez Canal since March 23 wrenched free from the sandy bank by tug boats on Monday, the next big concern for its crew comprising 25 Indians is how the Suez Canal Authority will treat them.

Both the Indian government and the seafarers’ organisations are concerned about the legal issues that the crew may face, including the possibility of criminal charges.

According to sources in the ship industry, one of the possibilities is that the captain and some of the crew may be restrained from travelling further.

They could be placed under house arrest until investigation is completed into the cause of the accident. The ship management, however, has not explained anything about the legal procedures the crew will have to go through.

“There is a clear danger that the crew will be made scapegoats,” a senior person associated with the ship industry said.

Captain Sanjay Prashar, member, National Ship Board (NSB), told TOI, “Firstly, it has to be ascertained as to how the giant ship ran aground. ‘Ever Given’ got stuck in the crucial Suez Canal on March 23, leading to a massive traffic jam. This resulted in more than 350 vessels — carrying everything from cattle, clothes to crude oil and furniture — getting stranded on both sides.

It costed the whole world 90 Billion dollars. I think proper investigation is required and if they find captain and crew are at fault, then they should be punished. Govt of India should send delegates to ensure fair investigation.

My understanding is during the passage of the canal the ship is under the command of the pilots who are supposed to have the expertise in knowing the layout of the canal and how to navigate around it. If anybody is responsible its these pilots. The captain has very little or no role during the passage of the canal.

As per the documentaries in the Discovery/Natgeo on Suez canal its the responsibility of the Suez authority appointed captain to steer the ship safely from the canal. The original ship captain and crew doesn't have any responsibility except assisting the suez captain. So no threat or fear. Author should study and write the articles instead of just creating fear.

Why speculate? When the investigation is on, let's wait for the results. Safe passage through the canal is the responsibility of the pilot assigned by suez canal authority and the tug boat crew as well as the ships crew. There are other factors, winds, technical malfunctions etc.
