NEW DELHI: The 2021 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was on Wednesday awarded to German scientist Benjamin List and Scotland-born scientist David WC MacMillan “for the development of asymmetric organocatalysis.”

"The 2021 chemistry laureates Benjamin List and David MacMillan have developed a new and ingenious tool for molecule building: organocatalysis. Its uses include research into new pharmaceuticals and it has also helped make chemistry greener," the Nobel Committee said.

Researchers long believed that there were just two types of catalysts available: metals and enzymes.

Independently of each other, laureates Benjamin List and David MacMillan developed a third type – asymmetric organocatalysis – which builds upon small organic molecules.

Last time an Indian who won a Nobel in Science (Physics/Chemistry) was prior to Independence, CV Raman. We did not have reservations back then. There are two more Indian born scientists who received it as well but with citizenship of US and UK, Subramanian Chandrashekaran in 1983 and Venki Ramakrishnan in 2009 respectively. Its not that we don't have brains, due to reservations some of these individuals move out of India.

Wng Nobels has more to do with the creation of research oriented scientific mindset and development of congenial eco systems in a country like India. It has less to do with the total population of a country. Despite less Nobel recognition, Indian institutions like IISc, Bangalore and UDCT and CISR's labs are doing great work under many constraints. Don't worry, apna time ayega!

Many Indian scientists who migrated to US and did wonders but were denied any recognition. There are many unsung hero who hold several US patents, yet were denied a Nobel prize. Not many Asians are considered for this award, only reserved for Americans and Europeans.
