BHOPAL: An Indian Air Force trainer jet crashed in the Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh on approach to land at Gwalior airbase on Thursday. Pilot ejected safely. Officials informed that the plane crashed at a farm near Babedi village.

“The aircraft was on a routine mission and was airborne from Air Force Station Gwalior,” said, officials adding that it crashed around a few nautical miles from the base while on approach for landing.

A Court of Inquiry is being ordered to investigate the cause of accident, sources in the MoD said.

Mobile phones recorded the dramatic scene as the fighter pilot parachuted into a farm, narrowly missing power lines. His jet, a Mirage-2000, lay smouldering in another field. The tail section had burrowed deep into the earth and scorched aircraft parts lay scattered everywhere, even in homes.
