India's Union Cabinet has approved a proposal to raise the legal age of marriage for women from 18 to 21. Will this reform end the scourge of forced early marriages in India?

In India law after law has affirmed the legal age of marriage to be 18 for women and 21 for men. Now, the marriage age will be 21 for both sexes. This is well-intentioned. But a good law in theory doesn’t mean much.

在印度，一部又一部法律确认女性的法定结婚年龄为18岁，男性为21岁。现在，男女的结婚年龄都将是21岁。这样做的意图是好的。但一部好的法律在理论上意义不大。

Government data indicate the average age when women get married in India has increased to 22.1 years. But 23.3% of women aged 20-24 years still get married before 18. This is pre-Covid data. Child marriages have reportedly increased during the pandemic, reminding us of the role of factors like poverty and lack of access to schools on top of traditional notions of female status, domestic work and family ‘honour’.

印度政府的数据显示，印度女性结婚的平均年龄已提高至22.1岁。
