‘India losing e-cycle manufacturing to Europe, China’

At a time when the government is focused on sustainability in mobility, the Indian cycle and electric-cycle industry (powered by battery) is losing production and sales to China, Europe, Japan and the US. This is due to the absence of government incentives on manufacturing or at the time of consumer purchase, Hero Cycles, the country’s largest cycle maker, has said.
在印度政府努力打造可持续性的交通运输系统之际,印度的自行车和电动自行车行业正在输给中国、欧洲、日本和美国。
日前,该国最大的自行车制造商“英雄牌自行车”(Hero Cycles)表示,这是由于印度政府对厂家,以及对消费者买车没有提供补贴。
Pankaj Munjal, chairman of HMC (Hero Motors Company), said the company is being forced to part-manufacture at locations outside India due to the absence of a robust supplier eco-system in the country and below-potential sales, especially of e-cycles, which though are selling strongly across global markets.

85% of the cost of a e-cycle is a battery … which is not made in india … aare they asking for a subsidy for 15% of the cost ?
In europe a lot of rich ise cycles when thry can afford cars … but india its a poor mans transport … a poor man can barely afford a 3k cycle how will he buy a 30 k cycle ?
Also what the e-cycle or ev motercycle companies dont tell you is how fast the battery detoriates ie when they sell u bike range is 140km … in 1 month the range falls to 80 km and in 3 months to under 40km ! How can you run a ev bike with 40km range in a city like delhi ! Even if we get charging infra you would be charging more than using !

City dwellers may afford e-bikes but where are the roads to ride them? India has no provision of cycling anymore. It has been left for villagers and kids in closed societies.
City roads are already congested and adding another mode of slow transport will simply paralyze the traffic control. Until and unless a dedicated area is not assigned on the roads, it is impossible for people to feel safe while riding an e-bike. Forget about purchasing it.

Agreed but everyone migrates to find work. What to do? The poor are migrating to the cities and the rich are migrating to US and Canada. It's a fight for survival. The only way is to develop rural areas but politicians keep them for vote banks only. I trust in BJP to make more factories near rural areas. For example the restoration of the ordnance factory in Amethi, UP will provide work to local villagers. Food processing plants are also being built in many corners of the country. Work from home ...

Using a cycle is quite unsafe. There are good chances that some vehicle will purposely touch and knock a cycle out of it's way. Unless this situation is improved, cycle will not become popular.
