In the weeks since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, India’s President Narendra Modi has been walking a diplomatic tightrope, balancing his country's ties with Moscow and the West. Michael Kugelman, Wilson Centre’s Asia programme deputy director, says India’s historical ties with Russia, and its strategic and military reliance on Moscow means New Delhi is unlikely to condemn the country for the invasion. However, Kugelman tells the Post's Alkira Reinfrank that Modi’s friendship with Russian President Vladimir Putin puts the Indian leader in a strong position to be a third-party mediator.

The Ukraine crisis has produced a unique moment in history where China, India, Pakistan, and other Muslim countries are all on the same side. All of these countries want a more multipolar world order, and an end to a unipolar world dominated by one country. The moment of common purpose, and the dangers exposed by the Ukraine war should cause China, India, Pakistan etc to use this time to settle our common conflicts to produce a more unified and safer Asia. I see India and China continue to choose neutrality. Both countries will increase oil & gas purchases from Russia. The bottom line is this is not an Asian crisis. It is a crisis in which US/NATO is culpable in creating by its incessant eastward expansion.

India issued an statement that "The matter should be solved by diplomatic talks " But India has abstained from voting against Russia because india is dependent on Russia for spare parts , maintenance and upgradation of Russian made  weapons which we use .
