'Ugly-looking girls' can be married off with attractive dowry: B.Sc textbook

NAGPUR: A textbook recommended for B.Sc (nursing) lists out the advantages of dowry by saying that “ugly looking girls can be married off”, alleged Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi in a letter addressed to the Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The book titled ‘Textbook of Sociology of Nurses’ by author TK Indrani has come under fire after Chaturvedi highlighted some of the contents.

“This book lays down the merits and advantages of the dowry system. It is part of the curriculum for second year B.Sc students,” said Chaturvedi.

In the so-called advantages section, the author claims that dowry can help ‘ugly-looking’ girls to get married. The book mentions that such girls with “attractive dowry” (high value) can be hitched with “well or ugly-looking boys”.

在所谓的优势部分，作者声称嫁妆能 让“丑”女孩嫁出去。书中提到，丑女孩有了“诱人的嫁妆”(价值不菲)，就能嫁出去。

Apart from commenting on the physical attributes of girls, Chaturvedi says the author also speaks about the academic part in connection with dowry. “Because of the burden of dowry, many parents have started to educate their girls. When the girls are educated, or even employed, the demand for dowry will be less. Thus, it is an indirect advantage,” the book goes on to say, as per Chaturvedi’s letter to minister Pradhan.

The Shiv Sena leader expressed her angst at such literature being available for students. “It is appalling how such derogatory and problematic text remains in circulation and that a textbook elaborating on the merits of dowry actually exsts in our curriculum,” wrote Chaturvedi.

The MP has demanded that a panel must oversee all content to ensure that anti-women content is not being propogated through textbooks.

Chaturvedi wrote, “It is more concerning that students are being exposed to such regressive content and no action has been taken so far. Such reinforcement of the dowry system is offensive and should be actioned upon immediately.”

What has the subject of dowry got to do with nursing degree course. Nonsensical subjects to study is wasting students time and non related topics banned. In my own experience a 5 year course had most of 2 years worth of subjects I consider a waste of time.

Dowry is today a security deposit taken by men to guard themselves against women-friendly and men-hostile laws like the dowry prohibition Act, the DV Act, the Indian Paternity Act etc. For eg, if a woman files a false dowry plaint or DV plaint the man needs money to pay bribes to cops and lawyer fees.
