NEW DELHI: The BJP has witnessed a remarkable rise in Indian politics in just over four decades of exstence.

Officially founded on April 6, 1980, the party emerged from the shadows of Jana Sangh, which was formed in 1951 by Shyama Prasad Mookerjee. The Jana Sangh merged with some other parties to form the Janata Party in 1977 after the Emergency imposed by then Congress Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The Janata Party dissolved in 1980 and its members formed the BJP with Atal Bihari Vajpayee as its first president.

BJP’s rise is also attributable to rise of Hindu consciousness. Hindus did not forget that their motherland was partitioned under Congress leadership. Pt Nehru even after partitioning of the motherland took to appeasement of minorities against opposition from his own party workers. BJP has managed to reverse this wrong policy and has created a consensus for pro Hindu polity. This pro Hindu transformation of polity will remain its biggest achievement.
