First of all Soviet Union helped India in 1971. Russia and Ukraine were part of Soviet Union.

There is difference between Soviet union and Russia.

And secondly Russia helps India not because it cared about India but because India is a largest arms buyer of Russia. Russia care about its own national interest.

I believe our nation wanted to side with Russia but was afraid of West's hegemonic brutality. China is self sufficient but india isn't. Any wrong move and it can find itself in a crisis too dangerous and too disastrous in the long run.
