SASARAM: If they were trying to steal the spotlight along with a lot of steel, they succeeded. Crafty scrap metal thieves dismantled and made off with a little-used, 60-foot steel-framed bridge of 45 years across the Ara-Sone canal in Bihar’s Rohtas district on Tuesday.

The heist at Amiyawar village, about 40km from Sasaram, has become the talking point in the area. Like “kitchen cockroaches”, thieves were chip away at the 500-tonne steelwork ever since a parallel concrete bridge was opened five years ago, locals said. But they never thought the entire structure would disappear one night.

According to police officer Subhash Kumar, the thieves came with bulldozers and gas-torches to tear apart the bridge and escape with the loot. Water resources junior engineer Kamal Shamim said an FIR was lodged on Thursday.

Prior to the bridge caper, theft of sand seized from the mining mafia had attracted much attention in the area last year. The sand was worth Rs 200 crore.

Weirdly, it isn’t the first time a bridge has disappeared. In 2012, intrepid thieves stole a bridge in broad daylight in the Czech Republic, claiming they were hired to demolish it. The year before, thieves removed $100,000 worth of steel from a bridge in Pennsylvania, US. Back in 2004, a 36-foot steel bridge in Ukraine was stolen for scrap metal.
