NYT: India stalling WHO’s global toll report; government says method flawed

NEW DELHI: India has locked horns with the World Health Organisation (WHO) over the methodology adopted to estimate Covid-19 deaths, and saying different yardsticks have been applied for different sets of countries to measure mortality during the pandemic.

新德里：印度与世界卫生组织就新冠死亡估计方法发生争论，称在疫情期间，不同国家采用了不同的标准来衡量死亡率。

“India’s basic objection has not been with the result (whatever they might have been) but rather the methodology adopted for the same,” the health ministry said, underlining that India has been in regular and in-depth technical exchange with WHO on the issue. If the model adopted is accurate and reliable, “it should be authenticated by running it for all Tier I countries and if result of such exercise may be shared with all Member States”.

印度卫生部表示：“印度的反对不是针对结果(不管结果如何)，而是针对采用的方法。”

The comment followed an NYT report that said India is trying to stall a WHO report on the global Covid toll by disputing the calculation of how many of its citizens died. The article states that the yet-to-be-released report has concluded that around 15 million people died worldwide by end-2021 — more than double the official total of six million reported by countries individually. More than a third of the additional 9 million deaths, the report said, are estimated to have occurred in India, which would then put the number of Covid deaths in the country at four million at least.

此前，《纽约时报》的一篇报道称，印度对本国公民死亡人数的计算存在争议，试图拖延世卫组织公布全球新冠肺炎死亡人数的报告。

However, NYT said, it was unable to learn the estimates for other countries.

According to the health ministry, the WHO analysis uses mortality figures directly obtained from Tier –1 set of countries, while for Tier II countries (including India), it uses a mathematical modelling process. In fact, it is not just India, specific queries have been raised by other WHO member states like China, Iran, Bangladesh, Syria, Ethiopia and Egypt regarding the methodology, and use of “unofficial sets of data”, the ministry said.

What ever has happened due to covid19 is a past affair. Death is high or not. Let us concentrate effort to contain 4th wave or further loss. So far Indians feel that Govt. acted sincerely and contained the pandemic well with available resources. Please do no waste time and energy with western countries on this issue of number of fatalities.

Unfortunately, WHO, NY Times and one very senior anchor of a Indian news channel have become synonymous in abusing India and PM Modi. While there may be a flaw in reporting number of deaths in India due to Corona, the continuous Anti India and anti PM Modi reporting by the above mentioned has created a hate in Indian mind against them.

There have been no Covid - related or oxygen - shortage related deaths in India. All deaths have only been due to natural causes and co-morbidities. The government has done a great job. Only applause is permitted.

Instead of expressing gratitude towards India's leading role in fighting Covid across the world, WHO is shamelessly singing to the tunes of its thankless western paymasters. Application of separate yardsticks for so called Tier 1 vs Tier 2 countries is completly flawed. India and the other impacted countries who are purposefully being shown in bad light must kick WHO out of their territories. Anyways, organizations like WHO and UN have lost their relevance in present times.

India has started getting into its own head. The death toll in India was excruciatingly high. India cannot hide its wrong doings by pointing its fingers to the other countries. The number of deaths in India in the second wave itself were way over 50 lakhs. So many families got ruined and the country still indulges in pointing fingers to the others. No transparency, no infrastructure in the country. Shame on you India.
