NEW DELHI: Even as an uneasy calm prevailed in northwest Delhi a day after violence erupted in Jahangirpuri when stones were hurled during a Shobha Yatra on Hanuman Jayanti, Delhi Police Sunday said it was probing “a larger conspiracy” behind the incident.

The cops apprehended 23 people, including two juveniles. They have identified and arrested two prime suspects, Ansar and Aslam. Sources said the probe not only aimed at probing a possible link of accused with the 2020 northeast Delhi riots and anti-CAA-NRC protests, but the lens is also on tracing local criminals, apart from some Rohingya and Bangladeshi migrants, who allegedly participated in and fuelled the violence.

The crime branch has been roped in for investigation and further crackdown. Police is also being aided by intelligence agencies. Many of those arrested have criminal records, police said.

A court on Sunday sent the duo to police custody for a day. Twelve other accused were sent to jail. The cops informed the court that main accused got to know about the Shobha Yatra on April 15 and hatched a conspiracy to disrupt communal harmony.

Aslam (21), who allegedly shot at a cop and injured him, has also been found involved in a case of assault with deadly weapons, violating prohibitory orders and criminal intimidation lodged in Jahangirpuri police station in 2020.
